I am looking for a photographer's assistant for a hotel brochure shoot in several different overseas locations. The job scope includes (but is not limited to) handling studio lights, photo accessories, setting up and dismantling, maintaining a log after every shoot and taking care of and ensuring the smooth running of equipment at all times.

All airfares, accommodation and meals will be provided, including a stipend of $150 a week. Applicants need to have a good attitude towards work, be physically fit (able to travel well and handle heavy equipment), willing to learn and take instruction, be a team player and ready to work long hours. Basic lighting experience would be an advantage.

First on-location shoot 7 - 13 Jan, second shoot 22 - 29 Jan. Future shoots scheduled for 12 - 25 March and April. If you are interested, please PM me with your photo experience and what you hope to learn from this. Details will only be shared with successful applicants.

Thanks!

sounds like you need someone with lots of experience

if so then the stipend should be changed to wage

Not at all. Beginners and students are welcome to apply. Of course some knowledge of photography/lighting would be an advantage. Most importantly, I need someone who is alert and keen to learn. Thanks.

I doubt if you can find someone like that. Honestly, with what your expectations are you'll be hard pressed to find someone to even meet you minimum requirements.

Realistically, how is a student or a beginner going to handle "studio lights, photo accessories, setting up and dismantling, maintaining a log after every shoot and taking care of and ensuring the smooth running of equipment at all times." You are asking for trouble or maybe even potentially screwing up your shoot.

Can you afford to have that happen for such a job?

Don't worry it's not as complicated as it sounds and it's really the best way for someone to learn. Obviously we will run through the equipment and need-to-do list beforehand and on site there will be porters and inhouse electrician/technicians on standby. I believe in lighting that is as natural and uncomplicated as possible.

Ultimately I am fully responsible for the outcome so for those of you who have ventured into photography but are wondering how an editorial/commercial shoot works, this is your chance.

Thanks for those who have PM-ed me, I will be in touch shortly.

normal rates for photographer assistants are at least around 100 per day hor. dun be cheapskate photographer. sommore overseas shoot. even i also give about 100-150 per day for assistants.

at $150 a week, $21 plus change a day ... excluding travelling time I presume ...

why don't you simply ask for volunteer ....

another sad day and hooray for the blatant exploitation of cheap/slave labor on CS

The rate assumes an entry level assistant/photographer. Also it is beneficial for both photographer and assistant to work with different parties so I don't expect to have the same assistant for every location.

For experienced assistants, please feel free to submit your day rates and I will contact you for future jobs with a higher budget.

Thanks for the many people who PMed me - I am heartened to see that passion is still alive in this industry and that it is not always about the money.

Cheers.

So you are telling me the going rate for an entry level assistant/photographer is S$21 a day.

I am sadden to see a photographer trying to exploit other budding phjotographers with what amounts to peanuts!

do you work for passion as well? the hotel only pays you $150 per day?

Macdonals pays better than that!!! $21 per day, what a rip off!

Being an assistant is a stepping stone to becoming a photographer. It is not a dead end. If you have a view of the long term, it is an investment in your future. You cannot compare it to working in McDonalds. And it beats taking a course or going to school where you would have to pay to learn.

I have worked for free as an assistant when I was trying to break into photography. I would still do it today if I thought there was something I could learn. For those of you who don't agree with me, fair enough, but I am interested to work with those who have the same philosophy.

So keep the PMs coming - I am going out of town all week but will be in touch asap. Thanks.

Why do we have to equate passion with low wages?? :dunno: Does this mean that only people who do what they don't like with a certain degree of reluctance deserve to command higher or at least decent renumeration?

You guys forgot about the airfare, accomodation and meals .. for starter phtographer should be a good steal ... and a chance to learn from a Pro to see whether he can fit in the bill for his future ..

Open up guys .. photography is about passion and with passion you can go far beyond ...

for an intern or other juniors whose skills are not yet that of a fulltime photographer and are on a learning phrase, i reckon it will be a good opportunity. they can treat it like hands on lessons with a working pro where not only do they don't need to pay school fees but also get a small fee on top of the lodging and travelling expenses.
Definitely not a deal for the 'lao-jiaos'....

Yup .. but photography is a life skills which you can use to further your path ... growing is there and much more .... cant compare apple and orange ... :dunno:

being an assisitant OVERSEAS for $150 a day should be okie.....

$150 a week = $600 a month?

 crazy fella

its not about macdonals, photography nor passion, its about fair trading!

If life skills is anything to go by, it teaches you that you can get a lowly paid assistant you could bring and work yourself for very low wages.

Every one things its fun to travel, how about the risks? if anything happens, is anyone going to cover yourself? What happens if the assistant is very sick during the trip? or robbed?

i'm sure it will be great experience, but please, be more fair, our cost of living is not by anymeans cheap, $21 a day, 10 hours a day its 2.10 per hour, sounds like your 'singapore ''forced'' male labour's pay for 2 years.

If you like to use passion to hold someone, its so darned 'cliche'!

anyway, there are lots of wannabes. so take heart and enjoy your trip, take care of yourself, cos i doubt you be taken care at all.
