Video DSLR problem

I'm currently using 500D for my work, my workstation has no problem of playing its 720p footage in NLE. I can import the mov file generated by 500D directly into Premiere CS4, without any transcoding.

I'm thinking to upgrade to 7D,550D or 5D II recently due to the 1080p recording capability in 30fps. However, I did some homework, realising that there are users complaining that the playback of the 1080p mov file is terribly slow in NLE during editing, as low as 6fps.

Since my workstation has no problem with 720p H264 mov, would that be a problem for 1080p H264 mov? I cannot afford to do transcoding, it's going to cost me arm and leg for wedding express highlight, Hope you guys can help me on this...

My workstation has a Quadro FX4500, it doesn't support CUDA, I was wondering if it could speed up the 1080p playback in NLE if I upgrade my graphic card to something which support CUDA. If graphic card doesn't help, what will? Nvidia Tesla? Please enlighten me...

Another confusing part is...my Z7p records 1080i M2T Mpeg2 to 16GB for 75 minis, 5D mark II can record much shorter time using a much higher compression (H264).It doesn't make sense, I think it has something got to do with the original bit rate from 5D II...I was hoping canon can provide us a better codec for editing rather than H264, I guess the mpeg2 with equivalent quality will be enormously huge... . I have read news about Sony is going to come out with video DSLR, should I wait for that?

Any of your input will be greatly appreciated! Thx in advance!

Eh, English please.

Hi,

You should never edit the files direct from DSLR as they are compressed. Check out streamclip or something like that and you should be able to convert it into something more workable which wont look laggy on your computer. 500D is a good camera. Try checking at

for those who wants to know abt sony video dslr cameras,
based on my opinions,
it will be better than what canon & nikon is doin. Y? sony is in the market long enough to create a good video camera.

Can you please elaborate on which Sony DSLRs are better than, e.g. Canon 7D for video, and let us know in what ways they are better?

To harness the processing power of the GPU of your graphics card, your NLE will need to have a plugin that talks to your graphics card. There was a company called Divideframe (or something along that line) that used to develop a Premiere/Vegas plugin to harness CUDA chips. But I think it is no longer around. Graphics cards generally do not help for video editing. A video card does.

Z7P produces 1440 X 1080. 5D produces 1920 X 1080. No matter who produces what file sizes, if you want 1920 X 1080 from SLR, currently you might really have to go by Canon. Got to accept it lor...

Okay, Canons DSLRs record to a FAT32 formatted card. And the maximum file size that can be recorded into the CF card would be 4GB(4096MB). One thing is that the 5D records at around 47Mbits/second(around 5.6MB/s) which works out to about 731 seconds before it reaches the limit. Thats about 12min.

You could actually try using one of those 35mm adaptors if you have a proper video camera. It'll save you alot of trouble of readapting your work flow to include footage from a 550d,7d,5d mk ii or 1d mk iv.

Have worked on Letus, very troublesome and don't really like it. It costs a bomb too.

Card Capacity / Bit rate = recording time...yes, but 5D II uses H264 compression, higher compression compared to Z7 Mpeg2, but it's still larger...

Hi bro, 500D is really an awesome camera, cheap and nice. The reason I'm going for full frame is that, I need to use 17-40 for wide angel time lapse. I have been working on 500D 720p footage directly without transcoding, it works fine,no lag. I'm not sure about 5D II 1080p footage...

Hi bro, I have work on Blackmagic and Matrox, it only helps for certain and their own encoding, doesn't seem to help for H264 editing, rendering yes.

Could you recommend some models can accelerate H264 editing...Hope it doesn't cost much...

Thx in advance:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Bro, I guess what he means was that:

Sony and Panasonic have been dominating ENG market for such a long time, there must be have more matured technology in making videocam. If sony were to announce a video DSLR, it might be better than Nikon and Canon one, in terms of, encoding, handling etc.

I'm a bit worried about Sony in doing this, 3 chip sensors found on ENG cam is not the same as DSLR CMOS...

Somehow I dont think he's talking about ENG market. Anyway, being strong in ENG doesnt mean their consumer DSLRs will be better than Canon's for anything, even video.

Well ic. What I'd recommend would be to rent a 5d II for a day. Shoot some footage and try to edit it. If it lags, its time to transcode or get a more powerful computer.

ah! It seems to be the ultimate solution...reading too much will get people stuck sometimes...thanks bro:thumbsup:

You could also try to download some sample footage and try it out on your NLE. DVInfonet forums should have some links to unprocessed footage files.
