Urgent! Thinking of moving from 550D to mirrorless. Lots of questions!!

Which mirrorless to get??

I'm going to get the white EP3 !! Now...what prime lens should I get?? I tried the panasonic 20mm F1.7. I like it !!

tsammyc recommended the sigma 19mm and 30mm. Gonna check them out after I get my set !

17-50 on Pen/Nex will work with right adapter but you can't control aperture, unless you buy a super expensive adapter from conurus/metabones which costs probably price of this lens. But also you wouldn't want to do that coz it can't AF, can do lens correction...the best choice choice for bright zoom is 12-35F2.8? which is supposed to be mid this year.
The few lenses that can achieve pretty good shallow depth of field are Panasonic 20/1.7, 25/1.4, 45/1.8 in order of ranking. By the way, this is not bokeh by the way which is how the lens well renders the out of focus area.

Here's a personal flickr set on 45/1.8 which is a pretty popular portrait lens, great for kids but you need some space to use this lens.

Btw, don't really understand what you meant by no Autofocus for OMD? A light half depress while video-ing will refocus the subject. Is that what you are looking for?

Get the om-d. Its a do it all camera for pros, fathers, mothers, people with terrible involuntary hand shakes and also for people with insatiable gear lust. It keeps u off Clubsnap for abt a couple of years as well... Haha till e-m6 comes out. :)

I'm sorry snapsort gave me the wrong info, OMD has autofocus for video. Sadly I did not get a demo set to play with today, and was even dissuaded from it due to the price by the shop owner. This shop is amazing, the owner keeps telling me NOT to buy stuff !

I will love to get the OMD. I was intending to have a huge tiff with my hubby by buying it first and tell him later. BUT no stock AND my hubby allowed me to get the EP3 with a huge debate soo I'm taking what I can get which is the EP3.

What I will lose by not getting the OMD
1. built in evf
2. 5 way stabilization
3. tilty screen

I will sob at the built in evf only. Hopefully can find a cheap second hand one in the future.

What you lose is also the shutter lag and FPS and hi iso performance, which is a marked improvement from EP3+VF2, imho:) The 5 way is good, and it seems to improve on the number of stops as well, I took MBS light show with 20/1.7 at 1/5sec handhold like a tourist. It's great. The price you pay for EP3+VF2 is almost body price of OMD :)

worth $800 difference? I need dough to get the 20/1.7 too. It's $560 ish for the lens? Second hands selling for around $430.

In all honesty, the high iso performance is worth it. Very Very. Plus if u get the weather sealed lens u do not need to worry about the rain. I was caught in the rain this labour day at pasir eis park, but was not so worried abt gear but more for my other stuff and daughter in the rain haha.

If you sell the 550d and tamron you can at least recoup back minimum 1k. Only drawback of om-d is its flash its detached...

You should consider the Panasonic G3 also which comes with a EVF.

Mounting your other lens via adapter means you'll be forsaking autofocus.
Translated, it means you'll be the only one taking pictures.

For me, I would sell off everything else and get either

1. EP3 body + 20mm lens (EVF can get much later when you find that LCD is not enough).
2. G3 body + 20mm lens
3. OM-D body + 20mm lens

My preference is towards G3 because Panasonic video is very good.
However, EP3 has IS, so it will be better to get this if you take a lot of photos.

He tell you that because OMD stocks are limited... EP3 far harder to sell off. The last generation of Pens with that old sensor (same as EP1) and at a premium price, vs OMD which is the first generation of the new sensor (likely to last for the next three years).

I hope you havent made the plunge yet with the EP3. I will say shell out the money for the EM-5. Its worth every cent.
Every camera shop i know are stuck with numerous set of EP3 which will be redundant very soon. If they dont push it now when EM-5 is in shortage, they will never be able to sell it off unless they lelong.

Try posting the same poll at Sony and Canon you may get a different result hehehe.

To me bro my advice if you can rent or borrow any of these camera you listed that would great and that will be the deal breaker. Like I said if you post this to Sony forum they will all say get 5n or Nex7 etc etc same goes when you post this to Canon they will ask you to not jump ship... To me try out all the cam not just test in the shop but bring it out and shoot with it, in the end it's you who will decide :-) not others

heehee the people at John3:16 also ask me to get EPL3, but I think the touch to take photo is very fun and I like the white colour ! Dumb reasons right !

Epl3 has the tilted screen which I think is useful when coaxing ur kid to take FOTO

TS is posting here to get validation to buy that E-M5, it is not that obvious?

:bsmilie:

correction: almost ALL cameras these days come with tilt-able LCD Screens.

ALSO...

when purchasing cameras from brands other than Canon, don't go to John 3:16 unless you know your camera stuff well
