Hi,
Any DSLR (KM5D) tripod recommendation for the most value for money buy?
Manfrotto tripod looks good but it's so expensive..
Is SILK U9000 a good buy?

Manfrotto 190pro is good, but a tat heavy... but its built to last. Slik (note not silk) is made of very light aluminium, its lighter than 190Pro, but its a bit fragile, a fren use it in a fight & it got bent... think i use a 190Pro to fight, the person might die...

I have one, the 190Pro Black. Solid sturdy and very heavy! U need a ballhead as well or perhaps u prefer panhead. I am used a Manfrotto 488RCO... medium-duty - about 8kg... I'm looking for a light tripod that is sturdy as well as cheap... Slik Sprint Pro comes to mind... u might try that as well...

i have a 190pro as well, indeed very sturdy.
but for traveling overseas or moutain hiking, it's a bit heavy.

imagine carrying that to climb mount kinabalu! u'll definitely wish that u had invested in a lighter tripod!

Invest a bit in your tripod. Cameras come and go, but tripod will remain for a long time. I wouldn't recommend the Slik U-series. Minimum I say get the 300/500/700DX series.

Sold my 300DX, got me a 2nd hand Manfrotto 055ProB, and I love it.

among many peoples as well as friends i asked...they won't bring the heavy tripod oversea. for that i alway feel it is such a waste....
and the place where people use tripod locally are almost standard location...

Hey, me looking for a new tripod for my KM5D too...
Went CP yesterday & they recommended the Slik 330DX thou I prefer the 340DX which is abit shorter (want it to be as compact as possible, since me not very tall I'm quite ok with the shorter extended height)... both come with default 3-way pan head but u can opt for additional ballhead separately... I was quoted below $150 for the abv models... & a separate Manfrotto ballhead (forgot which model) for abt $80-90...

The Slik U-series is more for the compact / prosumer cams... not recommended for dSLR's which are usually abt 1 kg or more after adding all the barangs... Din see the Slik Sprint Pro thou (but there's a cute Sprint Pro mini I think).

Saw quite a no. of pple in CS recommending Manfrotto 190Pro & 055ProB... but I find them too heavy for me (means stay home most of the time)... But I guess if u want more stability, it'll be more weighty... otherwise, crack ur piggy bank for the carbon fibre Gitzo... very light... but their prices will oso cause ur wallet to be very light too!!

Cathay Photo (Peninsula Plaza or Marina Square) has quite a gd range of Slik, Manfrotto, Gitzo tripods... Not sure if there's any other shop tt carry similar range thou...

Not sure about your budget...

tripod is the best investment for camera gears. As it is universal.

If you budget allow, get the Feisol CT-3401 carbon fiber tripod... it is light and nice height. All you need to do next is to look for a head that suit your need.

I am using CT-3401+MF 468RC2 and I am happy with it, the head is too heavy tough...

CT-3401 should be around $350 or something like that..

Bought a self-standing monopod Manfrotto 682B and Manfrotto 484RC2 head instead of tripod. It's more compact and slightly lighter than other tripod. Easy for travel.

But indeed it's not as stable as tripod, but reasonable stable for me, especially with the AS on. I find AS is a good companion for this monopod.

think the story goes like, he went to east coast to shoot the moon or something... den all of a sudden a malay guy came up to him & bash him... so he took his tripod to retaliate, the guy back off, den his slik tripod dented... den his head bleed & go hospital for a stitch...

so moral of the story, get a hard & sturdy tripod, dun just get the guy to back off, get him to go hospital together... :thumbsup: its always nice if somebody accompany you to the hospital... :sweatsm:

Here is what I use...

Feisol CF-3401 and Markins M20 ball head (total about S$800) But well worth it... hunt for second hand one, and you will find it cheaper. total weight is less than 2kg.

This combo is as good as any gitzo CF tripod at a fraction of cost.

Believe me or not, once you have this set up, you would want anything more... unless you need more height above 2m.

My principle with tripod, buy the best and forget about the rest, since you are likely to use 1 tripod in your life time. Don't waste your money for future upgrade.

The Slik 330dx range and the 190B Manfrot is of the came class. Build is about the same. How ever, there was once i tired out my 300DX(same joint type as the DX Slik series) vs the 190B in the Markins Ballhead facility in Korea and it was proven by the wind test(side vibration)....by the way the wind test uses teh normal home fan.... that the Slik version performed better then the manfrotto. They both performed on par for fast shutter ra..tat...tat..tat..tat type of shoot . Both can damp vertical vibration well.

My advice...get the best that you can afford.
The problem is many of us get the tripod as th elast item in the shoppin glist and after you got all the Cam,flash and lens.....youe end up only have a small budget for tripod.
Its best to get a good tripod right after you get the body and 1st lens....then you can see how a one-thought lousy lens csn give you really sharp outputs...heheh

Here is my past experience:
Slik 300DX Able series ---> Velbon 530 Series(current)
Markins M10 Ballhead-----> Benro KB-1 (Current)

A downgrade for the ball head as you can see as i do not use large load lens any more(400mm f4.5+1.4xTC). The Benro KB-1 really does its job and I personally find it smoother to operate as the
tension control is a separate knob. Its a breeze using with my D7D+@00mmF4Macro+Flash+Cable+Bracket.
Surprisingly better feel and easier tension control versus the Markins.

If you use a Heavier load (300mmf2.8,400mm f4/4.5,600mm etc) then Markins is the way to go.

my friend is using the SLIK 330DX tripod, pretty good. the max load is 3kg, good enough for most lens + 5d. heck, i still using a half broken SLIK U8000 tripod for my 5d + kit lens for the fireworks shoots this week (still within the max load of that tripod) :bsmilie:
