I shoot almost exclusively with tri-x.. usuallly at standard speed, but sometiems pushed to 800 or 1600.

ive decided to start developing myself. went to pick up the kit from ruby. hwoever, they only sold ilfosol S developer.

anyway, on further research, it seems ilfosol S is not really recommended for push developing tri-x.

anyone here who develops tri-x regularly, be grateful to know what you use.

unfortunately, it doesnt appear that there is a lot of choice locally. i check with CP and they only have HC-110 and T-max developer.

Check the Massive Development Chart.

I still shoot exclusively on films for all my assigment be it color or black & white. So, I develop films almost every other day :)

Ilford DD-X is a actually a very good choice for pushed films (I usually shoot at ISO1600). Although a tad expensive, it's actually very convenient to use since the mixture is very straightforward - 1:4.

The other good choice is Kodak's very own HC110. You can get them at Cathay and Ruby. HC110 is a also a very good universal developer as it works well with normal exposure and pushed film. My only gripe is that it's not very convenient to use as you need to make a stock solution first. On the brigther side, it's cheaper than the DD-X

i know the developing times for ilfosol.
what i was actually wanting to find out.. is what developer you guys use like to use for tri-x and your recipes

Like I said for now I'm using Ilford DD-X

thanks. sorry didnt see your post when i posted mine.. damn laggy today in the office. is dd-x available locally?

i've been using tmax, a little expensive but certainly gets the job done, especially when pushing. i'm thinking of trying d76 next. hoping to share the stock 3.8 liters with someone.

D76 can get here? dont mind sharing.

Hmm...from my experience Tmax dev dun work very well for pushed films.

hmm

my take so far?

DIAFINE from overseas :p

if i remember correctly, tmax was designed for pushing. anyway, i've been pusing pan400 to 1600 with pretty good grain and exposure seems alright. so, i've got no complains. let me know if anyone wants to share a pack of d76, i've left about enough for 3 rolls.

check into suitcase.. should not be any issue.

adorama ship overseas, but the shipping is ex.. US50!

Ruby has DD-X, Microphen, HC-110, D76 ...

I use Rodinal now, long-time popular Tri-X developer, but not available locally (see other thread on Rodinal). Also, this requires experimentation for a development time that suits one's preferences, and not just blind following of the recommended times on the web, or even by the chart inside Rodinal's box (for Tri-X) which results in too much contrast/development for me. I always try not to push film, though, I haven't pushed film for over a year, I'd rather pull than push.

I also occasionally use DD-X for Tri-X when I want finer grain. And when I need even finer grain, I use Perceptol.

Prior to that, I found Tmax good for at most 2 f-stops pushing, even DD-X, and not only for Tri-X. DD-X results in smaller grain for me than Tmax. Tonal range for both is good, which I prefer over using D76 or HC110.

Then again, it is all a matter of taste. Like these guys seem to prefer D76:

Or you can try Ilford Microphen, recommended for pushing. I bought some of these, but have no experience with them yet, as I only keep them in case I accidentally shoot at very high ISO, or forced to do so, and need to push.

Are you using Microphen/Perceptol at 20degC? Mind sharing your method of cooling the solution down to 20C with us? :)

I used to use ID-11 but found that 'tropicalizing' HC-110 was a much better solution. I use HC-110 and develop Tri-X at ISO 400, 11 minutes in local water temperature (about 28C). Dilute 1:100.
