everyday eat icecream
:)

just have lots of ice cream in the freezer, helps alot.. the hospital also gave me ice cream as my first 'meal' after the op.

no worries mate, you'll be fine! ;)

COMPLETELY AGREE with this.

your best diet is and WILL BE:

Frozen ice creams and Frozen NATURAL yoghurt.

Ok. Look like this weekend is ice-cream and frozen yoghurt purchasing day. Look like I also need a lot of cold water. Think I also make some ice-cubes for sucking

Hi John,

I remember you from a CU filter MO.

OK, basically the idea is to heal as quickly as possible and avoid secondary bacterial infections.

Unless you have a condition that's contra-indicative (like coronary issues), load up on Vit K at least a week or two before, or make sure you eat heaps of cooked cabbage at every meal. AVOID blood thinners like Ginko and aspirin. Check with your doctor for certainty.

Eat as healthily and as cleanly as possible for the period leading up to the surgery (LOTS of fruits and dark green leafy vegetables and avoid violent foods [deep fried foods, spicy foods, greasy food etc] or any food which are more prone to introducing bacteria to your system like chicken rice, rojak, pre-prepared sandwiches, offals etc).

Take multi-Vits daily but don't overload. Just take the recommended dosage.

On the first day post-op, you'll feel too lousy from the GA to want to eat anything anyway, so don't worry. Sip as much cool boiled water as possible for hydration.

Ice Cream and yoghurt diets are good ideas, but for the period immediately post-op, I would avoid sucking home-made ice cubes etc. Simple reason of lessening the chance of bacterial infections.

Oral hygine will be one of the most important issues post-op as you would not be using/moving your mouth much due to pain, or brushing much (or at all for a few days) which may lead to a heavy bacterial build-up. Ask the doctor for their recommendation of strong oral anti-bacterial washes, or my preference would be Cholrahexadine at a 010% concentration (not 0.05% like what's publically available). Personally, I would also request for a covering anti-biotic if none are prescribed.

Since you will be hardly able to brush your teeth the first/second day, use tounge scrapers (to scrape your tounge - a veritable sponge for bacteria to collect and grow) as well as think of using rough sterile gauze squares soaked in the provided mouth wash or Chlorahexadine and try to gently rub the surfaces of your teeth. Do all this slowly, and for as long as you can't brush your teeth AND mouth properly. I would continue the anti-bacterial washes/gargle for at least a week post-op.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips. Didn't know there is so much things to prepare. Better put them on my checklist.

Don 't know why this morning wake up with something feeling wrong with my throat. Hopefully it is not another sore throat or have to reschedule the surgery.

Hi John,

I will be getting my operation in January too!! Its great to be CS members where you can find all the info under the sun!
It is a scary operation, but I have been taking 5 course of antibiotics but always recurring and it starts to irritate me. Unfortunately, I am working on a project overseas, so I am trying very hard to "hold-back" my tonsil from inflamming as I can only do the surgery in January.

So just something that I always wonder, you know how your mom always tell u that drinking cold water or eating ice cream will lead to tonsillitis/sore throat? Is it true?

Not sure abt it but one thing's for sure, I'll get really bad infection if I take chocolates. After the operation, I can eat Kit Kat everyday hehehe.....

You can still get sore throats after a tonsillectomy. You just don't get tonsillitis. So easy with the Kit Kat!

please get a second opinion on this... i've encountered a specialist who wants to remove my friend's tonsil but after going for second opinion it's not necessary. tonsil i believe is there for a reason. as first line of defense to block virus, etc.. P.S I'm no doctor so double check with your doctor ;)

good luck with ur operation

I think you have to ask your friend what is the problem he encountered that he decided to visit a specialist in the first place. It might be the same case as azul. For my case, I know I can don't go for it, but I'm not prepare to face years of trouble sleeping and sore throat, fever, flu? Everytime a flu or fever will take me at least 2 weeks to recover. And I don't want to wear a mask when I sleep.

Haha didnt know so many of us here have gone for the operation.

I have got mine removed 3 to 4 years ago at Alexandra hospital. It gets pretty bad whenever I got a throat inflammation or sore throat. However, its not this that made me decide to go for the ops. Rather, I've got 3 holes in my tonsil that food like garlie bits or rice bits, etc tend to get stuck in these holes. Afterwhich I'll have to remove them manually (using pincers.. yeah I know rather Gross :bsmilie:), else they will start to decay during the night when I am not swallowing saliva. It gets so bad that it happens few times a week and it is affecting my life!

Luckily, I was in the army then and the M.O advised me to have the tonil removed. Got a free operation using my 11B, fully taken care off by SAF!

8 hours before the operation, NO FOOD! Once in the ops theatre, I got knockout at the count of 5. My mom got worried as they told her it will be a 2 to 3 hrs ops but mine was like 5 hours. The nurses tried to wake me up at the ward and asked me to drank a glass of orange juice. MAN.. the throats hurt more than any sore throat I ever had! Took sips of juices and went back to sleep. Was awaken about half an hour later and told to checkout. Every swallowing of saliva hurts! Pain lasted for abt a week. During that week, took lots of ice-cream and mainly congee! Good time for those whom inted to lose weight (but not me).

Problem is gone with the pain and I am glad I went for the ops!

Maybe you have not tried good antibiotics or the doctor didn't give you those that really effective with these types of condition.

I asked my GP for Augmentin (amoxycillin + clavulanate potassium), it's expensive than normal prescription drugs but really effective for me.

These are the type that cause bad breath, good that you had your tonsils remove, good for your GF or Wife.

Good to see more and more people take a special interest in their health. All the money in the world cannot buy you a good healthy body, after it fails.. so, keep it healthy.

If you are loading up with antibiotics frequently, then it would be better to proceed with the ops.
Did mine 20 years ago and still alive and kicking. Defence system still working well and quality of life better, yep! no fever, sorethroats every month etc.

You know your body better than the doctor, the choice is yours.
Take lots of ice-cream, definitely feel better after that.

This one I agree totally, alot of doctors just know how to get rid of the 'present' problem not look for ways to source the cause.
