yeah.. the girls.. haha even in chilling temperatures, they still come out in miniskirts.. the girls in roponggi district omg. really nose bleed...!! hehe

thanks man!

the first two days i didnt have the ND4 filter.. some of the photos i took outdoors were a bit wasted as they were washed out and lost a lot of detail.. so the third day i decided to go to a camera shop and buy a neutral density filter as i did not want to waste any more good photo opportunities!

camera stuff in Japan is not cheap!! i bought a Kenko Pro1 filter, set me back like 5000yen ++
almost ran out of CF card space too, wanted to buy a 8gb Sandisk Ultra II but after conversion it costs >$100... faint..

Haha, the white balance for most of your indoor shots are also perfectly balanced, really good shots. I assume they are balanced in photoshop?

Oh yes! Went to Japan and faced the same problem as you. Since I shoot RAW and brought only a 4GB along, was so tempted to get another card there but prices are just insane. However, I get my filters from Japan as I can only find Marumi there. Used to using Marumi so I usually get my filters in Japan. BIC Camera is one sick and poisonous place :D

thanks man, yep they were balanced in Camera Raw before processing in pshop CS4.

my setup was a 50D, 17-55, 50 f1.4, 35 f2. i shot in raw too, and i brought like 20gb worth of CF card haha was panicking towards the end of the trip when my card space was running low.. i have no idea why CF cards there are so expensive! almost double the price..

didnt take a CPL along and was tempted to buy one there, but the price.. lol. couldn't find any B+W filters.. only saw kenko and hoya.

love the camera shops there.. they display every model, and every lens, and you're free to swap out and interchange the lenses by yourself to try! i played with all the 1D/1Ds/D3/D3x/D700.. so fun!! :)

neat and nice!

thanks for sharing

thanks for viewing! :)

but somehow i think the pics dont do the place justice.. Japan must be seen for yourself! the extremely polite and helpful people made the experience all the more enjoyable! i cant wait for my next trip there..

Super! I only brought my 17-55 f/2.8 along with my 40D during my last trip. 20GB is one heck a lot of cards LOL... I now bring along a laptop for my subsequent trips (I go there a couple of times year).

Yes the camera shops there are simply out of the world. I went to the Ikebukuro BIC Camera in December and they had this 800mm Canon lens which you can mount your body onto to "test" the lens. So fantastic! Okay I look forward to more of your Tokyo shots in the near future, now back to your photo set

wow...great pics..love them...

I will be going to Hokkaido soon and hope to take some good pics. Plan to bring my 40d + 17-55mm and 50mm f1.8.

Noted your comments "some of the photos i took outdoors were a bit wasted as they were washed out and lost a lot of detail..".

Do u recommend to buy a ND4 filter here in Singapore or a polariser filter instead? Any recommendation on which filter or brand to get?

Thanks in advance.

i brought my 2 primes along, but barely used them more than a few times. but safe to bring along in case u need it :)

yeah i recommend u buy a neutral density filter especially if the sun hits hard.. sometimes u just need one if shooting outdoors under a bright sun. there are a few types, ND2, ND4, ND8.. depending on your needs.. i was in a rush and decided on the ND4, i think its a safe choice, but u may want to research a bit more before u plop down your money.

i bought kenko as its the only one i could find there at the store that day with 77mm size.

polarizer and neutral density filter is different by the way! i should've brought a polarizer too but didnt.. :(

Thanks for your quick reply. Appreciate it.

I will check out the ND filter. I was hoping to just get one filter only....;p

nice.... thanks for sharing!

# 11 is a nice take. Without the guy with the mask, the people at the background would be just another scene

I quite like # 16 too!

Haven been to Tokyo before, but I would probably transit in Tokyo for my nxt Jap trip.

Roasty care to share with us wat was your itinerary like ?

Ryan

mine was a free and easy holiday.. dont really like rushing around as it is with tour groups.

took a midnight flight and arrived in tokyo the next morning, so went around Shinjuku and Shibuya area, then night time went to find good stuff to eat :)

second day followed a day tour for the morning, which took us to tokyo towers, the imperial palace east gardens, Meiji shrine, then stopped at Ginza around lunch time.. from then on, we were on our own again, so took our time to visit asakusa kannon temple and then onwards to akihabara and roppongi.

third day whole day was in disneyland, then night time looking for good food again haha
fourth day was at mt fuji area, and the fujikyu highlands amusement park..
last day, woke up early in the morning to go to the tsukiji fish market, went back to shibuya for last minute shopping, then a quick stop at harajuku for a look see.

wish i had a few more days there.. 5-6 days really not enough to see everything i wanted to see.. and didnt get a chance to eat more food!

Nice pictures you got there. It reminds me of what I failed to capture!

Actually, I was also in Tokyo last week with my entire family. I ended up taking mostly portrait shots of my kids and wife with the attractions.

One thing I'll learn from this is to improve by photographer's instinct. Just snap-and-snap, not just looking in awe with the beautiful place.

BTW, some things I observed and liked in Tokyo:
1) People do not smoke in the streets or any public crowded area.
2) People do not use their phones on the train. Even if they needed so, they use it briefly and don't talk so loud.
3) People can eat in trains. I saw one jap who actually prepared and ate his noodle inside the train. In spite of this, the trains are still clean.

Great photos! Tokyo is an awesome city.

Um, are you sure that #54 is Salmon... i saw similar 'chucks' of fish when i vivsted the bmarket, assumed it was Tuna... nope it was Whale.

thanks man.. well no worries, there is always a next trip! :) looking back, i actually wish i had taken more photographs of the people there..

yup, smoking in the streets is prohibited there.. there are designated smoking spots scattered around the block. occasionally, when no designated spot is to be found, people there will find a small alley to smoke, then they'll extinguish their cigarettes and place the ciggy butt in a small pouch which they carry around til they find a dustbin to empty the contents to.

yeah i also did not see anyone using their phones in the subway.. in fact, i saw signs asking ppl to silence their phones so as not to disturb other passengers. how thoughtful and considerate!

yeah tokyo is awesome.. so vast and huge! love the cleanliness and the buildings/signs there. hope to visit osaka/hokkaido one day too!

re #54, i think its salmon, saw a sign near the bottom saying 'samon', .. but on second thoughts, it does look like a much bigger fish!!

hmm.. nd4 filter just cuts the overall brightness by 2 stops. it doesnt do anything to reduce contrast, unless u are talking about an nd grad filter. the only way i see it affecting is if you want to shoot at a wide f-stop and you have already max-ed out your fastest shutter speed.

ooops! i guess my understanding of the ND filter is wrong.. :embrass: thanks man. have looked up on the web.. guess in my case it worked to open up the aperture with a correct exposure..

That's what i like about their shops there. They let customers do what they like...not like ours...:sweatsm:
