Here's an earlier test of my Tamron 500mm f8 with 100% crops for comparison. Had to take several shots to choose the one with best focus.

Original, taken at 1/500s.

Looks like Tamron 500mm is a better mirror lens if there's no post process done on your shots.

This is the best for Tokina 500mm with flash

The above images were converted from DNG, 250,0.5,1 USM after opening in photoshop.

It's lovely....
i tried getting a shot with an old 210mm lens just now when the moon is red... yes.. red...
sadly.. not single clear shot... despite 2seconds with tripod.... sad... :(

Thanks. Took mine with a tripod and USM was required;) 1st shot I recall was 1/8s and 2nd is 1/10s. The moon is brighter tonight:D It's lovely too, you all should try shoting it:)

ok...took some full moon shots using my Sigma 500mm Mirror Lens + K100D.
Full moon is more challenging than my previous crescent moon because there are lesser shows to create relief and the glare will wash out any other details. No processing down except for cropping. What is interesting is inspite of setting to best resolution jpg, all the file sizes were only 200K+! I guess black does not have much pixel info...

Interesting facts :
(Referenced to my photos).

To the ancient Chinese (who did not have telescopes but had to make out the shapes with their naked eyes), the bottom dark "seas" is actually the rabbit while the tall dark area from top to the left is Chang E, the moon goddess.

The 2 massive craters to the right and below centre is Tyco and Copernicus, named after 2 famous astronomers. At the top right dark area is the Sea of Tranquility where Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed in 1969, being the first humans to walk on the moon.

Very nice! I've never got anything like that yet. Might get a mirror lens just for shooting the moon

Hi Feng Wei
You should sweep trhough ebay for one. I thought I had a pretty good deal paying only a few hundreds for my Sigma 500mm but Longko paid only US$65+ shipping for his!
Luckily my lens still performed admirably. One gripe is the lens does not have an "A" setting , so there was no way to adjust the aperture at all. regardless of the setting of the camera, I could only adjust the exposure.

BTW, I can't really tell but between the Sigma, Tamron and Tokina, anyone can conclude which one is optically better and why ?

cheers

I think that constant aperture is a feature of mirror lenses...

Tamron should be the sharpest for these 500mm mirror lens, then Sigma and the lowest would be Tokina. IMHO the Tokina 500mm is a steal for its price. Sigma 600mm has more range for the price of Tamron 500mm. But the best optics for these old mirror lens should be a good copy of those russian lens (correct me if I'm wrong.) It's like a gamble buying these lenses as they don't have QC, so not all are good.

Lens was priced at US$75 but I best offer US$65 and got it;) But since the seller wants to send by express, I ended up paying US$35 for shipping:bsmilie:

wah.. thats really low pricings...
looking for a c-mount for cctv camera

thanks !!
