Are they only obvious in if I blow the pic up real big like an 8R?
On 4R or 5R, you can't see the difference with other lenses. So if you just print at that size, this lens is good enough.
At 8R or 10R (around A4 paper size), the softness at f2.8 start to be visible, but at f5.6 and above, quite good.
At prints larger than 12R, the difference with the Nikkor is obvious.
Well, considering its price is less than half of the comparative Nikkor, means price-performace is still good.

How well is flare control in Canon 28-70mm L? I heard Tokina is bad in this area. Sigma 28-70mm EX that I have used control flare very well. Direct shoot into the sun shows little to no flare at all. Btw, Sigma minimum focusing distance is 40cm.

From tsdh's initial post of the comparison, it's very acceptable to me, for the price difference.
For low-contrast scene (such as portraiture, in my initial post), it is acceptable if considering the price. But for high-contrast scene, there is another problem I had pointed out in the second set of pics. Generally, it is good at f5.6 and above. At f4 is still marginal.

tsdh: The 2nd set of pics is the 28-70 or 28-80?
The pic of lens at the second set, was taken using Tokina 28-80/2.8 (I borrow from a friend before purchasing the 28-70).
The rest of pics, were taken using Tokina 28-70.
Both lens exhibit the same characteristic.
Somebody said that the price is tempting, true, in fact I still bought the 28-70 even after testing the 28-80, excusing its poor performance at f2.8

Thanks for the clarification. Do you happen to have tested the optical performances of both the 28-70 and 80? How do they compare to each other?

Hmm... seem like there's no substitute for "the real thing" eh? Maybe I should just practice foot zooming with a 50/1.8. :)

ckiang, u gimme money , i'll go and buy scanner.

i am also thinking of getting a good mid range zoom to replace my EF28-105 usm. cheers

oh look, someone posted photos using a 28-70EX, http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9116 and it looks like he shot wide open at f2.8.....

note that the latest version, 28-70EX DF is supposed to be 'improved' and more 'ex' but the old version is still available.

Unfortunately, I didn't test the optical performance. The 28-80 I borrow last time, was from the first production batch, the AF can't focus correctly (I tested it using F801, F90 and F100)
I just shot one rol of film with it, from the result right away can notice its poor performance at wide open, even without shooting at test target.

:) foot zooming, back to the day before zoom.
Cartier Bresson also shot all of his pictures without zoom. :)

So far I can't find any substitute for the "real thing", once I look at Tamron 35-105/2.8, but some people said its distortion is unacceptable. Since I need toward 28mm end, more than short-tele, so I ignore the Tamron.

I see. Do you have a 100% crop from a scan of the 28-70 @ 28/2.8 and 28/4 ?

Yeah, maybe I should do just that. Until I can afford the "real thing". ;p

If you want to try the Tokina lens yourself, why not just buy 2nd hand $400. Later if you feel uncomfortable with it, then sell again, let say, at $300. So you lost $100 for the "rental".
Last time I bought mine for $650, and sold for $400, still complete with box and everything, like brand new condition.

I have a lobang for a 12mth old ATX Pro 280 for $500. Box recepit hood and all. And condititon is ok except some dust in the lens. Do u think it worth it?

Depend on your expectation. If you can live with its inferiority at wide aperture, then it's ok.

Yeah considering the price and I am not a PRO... am still learning. I might settle for that coz its still better than my 28-105 3.5-5.6.

Maybe when I get better then upgrade. Btw do you see the glowing effect across all F ? or is just 2.8 to 4 only?
