All potential owner please be aware of version ii is already in the market! At a slightly higher price than then version i but u get gmr (faster and silent af) and improved coating!

It certainly is better for those with entry level dSLRs w/o AF motor but for those with higher end dSLR, i think there is little to no difference

In fact, an article I've read actually suggests that lenses with AF motors are more prone to failures than those without as the addition of a moving part and electronics adds another point of failure.

Yup. Its like for Nikon AF-D vs AF-S lenses. the former are just all gears and driven by the motor on body, while the latter is dependent on the motor in the lens which may subjected to say weather leading to corrosion etc etc.

But if QC and workmanship is good, need not worry about failing within 3-5 years.

A consolation is that my tamiya motor (ultra dash) still works after 12 years sitting in my cupboard, and it cost only $19.90. hopefully lenses with motor have the same reliability hahahah
