Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 User Group

This lens is really money well spent. I wasn't expecting to use it much while on travels but when in Italy, this lens was used more than 90% of all my shots..you really do need a UWA lens to capture buildings like in Italy..nothing else can capture everything.

Really wish any of my friends will be going HK now to get back this lens for me. The pictures are awesome. Very nice taken.

Does anyone has issues with flares on the lens? I tried shooting evenings at MBS or Esplanade area and get flares like crazy, it's really irritating to hv 1-2 orphaned spots of light on the picture. how do u prevent it?

So far when I'm pointing in front (12o'clock), I found flares appearing when I hv light source at 2o'clock direction.. At least this is my observation after 2 city night shoots.

Will a ND or GND filter prevent flare?

Actually UWA lenses are quite prone to flares and ghostings.. With filters on, it's worst regardless cheapo or not.. Haha..

First thing u can do is to remove any filter u may have in front of the lens. Second, u can minimise by careful positioning of ur lens n camera....

i have to say... i was skeptical at this tip.. but after removing the cheapo UV filter, the flares are 95% gone! ok i'm going to get a much better filter now. Thanks!

Just shoot "naked", I.e., no filter. Have to be a little more careful, that's all.

A non-coated filter makes things worse. Using higher quality coated filters reduces flare but shooting without filters are the best.

Why waste money? Just shoot without filter. A glass without visual purpose in the front element degrades picture most of the time. Just bring a blower and cloth for cleaning. Dust speck in the front element never appears in my picture, just need to be careful with sea water.

I have did a quick check in the forum but can't find any price guide for filters. Where do you get yours from and how much you get it for?

thinking of getting a 11-16 for both landscape & portrait use. I've seen new ones selling for $890+- in SG. anyone can advise if there are better deals around?

This lens is money well spent. I used it 95% of the time in Italy. No other lens could capture the sheer size of everything there. And if you've ever wondered why you would need a f2.8 on a UWA? Well, i asked that same question and i got my answer. Even in museums and churches in Italy, everything inside was huge and to capture the entire scene, you will need a UWA and being indoors and low light..the F2.8 came in so handy. Even with f2.8, my ISO was never below 1600…since tripods are usually not allowed, that's where a F2.8 UWA really saves the day...

Actually, most of us when shooting at night, will remove the UV filters.

And those are not flares.. but more ghosting.
