There is a money changer near Tin Cheung and beside one of the TST MTR exit, the name is Standard, it's a typical booth in a very typical shop.....you guess it....an indian tailor shop! The rates are comparable to local rates, so it's a nice place to change if you run out of hkd currency.

Man Shing and other big shops do not charge extra for using cc, Tin Cheung charge 2% more if using card.

I'll be going duroing the 23- 27 christmas period, would be glad if anyone have the price for an 50L? how is it compared to our singapore pricing.
Thanks

it depends on where you change your money at...... the bunch of money changers located in Chung King Mansion (next to Holiday Inn on Nathan Rd) are pretty good with rates.... MUCH better than the little kiosks scattered around HK

Chung King Mansion is definitely the best place in money exchange. Maybe when I was there, it was Sat so some money changer close. The rate I found there, the best rate is still not as good as we change in Sg, i.e. in Sg last month, 1SGD=5.52 HKD, in HK, 1SGD=5.4HKD (I check with someone in Sg same time)

Maybe on weekday, when more money changer open, the rate will be better.

What I did was to buy filters from Clubsnap MO and bring along with me to HK. The filter price are not that cheap in HK unless you know where to go. The electronic chain stores' filter price is usually higher. If you must, Tin Cheung is a good place to buy high end filters. Their price is still reasonable.

Haha, agree... I just realized the MO is the cheapest way to get a higher end filter. I have spend relatively more on filter in HK, only recently start looking into MO in Clubsnap... ;p Yes I realized Tin Cheung's filter is comparable to Sg's shop price.

The filters and accessories are really alot alot cheaper in Sham shui po, there is a stretch of shops selling all such stuff on both sides of the road at sham shui po. Will be back in Jan 10, so if anyone is heading up during that period let me know then we can go together. =)

maybe you can refer to this blog by roland... i am sure it will help!

http://rolandlim.wordpress.com/2009/03/20/camera-lens-street-price-list/

and yes with the super good exchange rate now, getting a lens or things there is certainly worth it... i am thinking of getting a 24-105L there as well, 200 cheaper than local!

1. Echo Photo & Audio ( tel:23760478 ) at Shop D, G/F, Hanyee Building, 19-21 Hankow Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, is the camera store which I shopped from most. I have shopped from them for over 20 years. It’s a small camera shop (they didn’t used to be that small, but that’s another story) diagonally opposite HMV record store. Although it is not a big store, they are good and honest store and usually sell at good prices. Since they are not a big store, they may not have everything in stock, but if the distributor have the item you want in stock, they can usually get it for you within the same day or the next. When you are there make sure you ask for Mr Yip and tell him that I recommended their shop to you. That should help

Have anyone tried? using his name to look for Mr. Yip, better discount?

Hey all!

thanks for your contributions in this thread :) i'm gonna make sure my trip up to HK would be a fruitful one.

and oh yes, some of you were discussing about payment by cards or cash. i'll be bringing an amount of cash up but mostly lens purchases would be made by my dad's credit card first then i'll pay him in SGD when we get back. would that be adviced?

because 2 years back when my friend went to taiwan to get a 400D for me he paid using card and the exchange rate was better than when paying by cash..

(BTW, i've recieved some request for me to get lenses. i'm sorry to those who are intending to after reading this, but i won't be accepting anymore request. hope you understand, its a family holiday, not a business trip :) )

Just in case you guys do not know......... DBS have many (almost 50 i think) DBS ATMs located in HK (Central, Kowloon, Causeway Bay etc etc etc)

ANOTHER way to get hold of HK$ .........if you have your POSBank or DBS ATM card ...... can just go to any DBS HK ATM and draw HK$......... the equivalent in SG$ will be deducted from your DBS or POSBank account

DBS ATM machines locations in Hong Kong

BUT if you're out of cash and have no choice, i doubt if a transaction fee of a couple dollars or a lousy exchange rate is going to be that big of an issue, no ?

Ya, I realised DBS got many ATM in HK, but the moment I need the money, I don't know where is it located, so no choice... The SGD5 transaction charge is unavoidable.

If not wrong, the exchange rate I got from Bank (CitiBank) ATM withdraw is about 5.45, as oppose to 5.4 of money changer there. But added with SGD5 per withdraw.

yes, personally i have tried the last time i was there. he was really quite a nice guy and he will honour the prices stated on the link i gave when you use roland's name. he gave me a good price for 40D during my last visit there, that's why i am considering getting the 24-105L there...

Wow... holiday mood liao..

I just want to wish you guys have a nice, safe and enjoyable trip to HK :)

btw, i dun find transaction using CC differs much from cash (just marginal only).
i have tried to compare during my trip to korea and jakarta recently.
the CC i used was HSBC and UOB cc.

From my experience, lens prices in Hong Kong are cheaper than Singapore but not by much. Canon lens prices in Indonesia are a lot cheaper! But accessories like flash, and camera bodies are cheaper in Hong Kong. I can't wait to go to Hong Kong. I'm gonna spend the new year's eve there. Anyone knows the best spot to go on new year's eve? I'm thinking the harbor at the Harbour City shopping mall...

Whoa Gitzo is crazy expensive. I got Benro, the chinese gitzo :bsmilie: Carbon fiber for the fraction of the price! Couldn't be happier with it.

i'm still considering whether to get the 2542L.. Tin Cheung quoted HKD4,750 for CASH and HKD4,845 for Credit Card.. small difference if pay by credit card because i did not bring enough cash.. :bsmilie:

Win Shing quoted HKD4,730 though.. but if the price is same even paying by credit card as what some bros mentioned earlier.. then i don't mind getting it from Wing Shing then..

Can be true on certain lens. Actually, my observation is, usually HK cheaper then about 8%-12%. It is like buying in Sg without paying the 7%GST.
