PC SHOW now got lots of free gifts to offer with the 40D, including 50mm F1.8 free with extended warranty purchase.

I personally would do that, but I heard the tamron 17-50 is NOISY when autofocusing. Maybe you can lay off the zoom lens and just get a EFS 17-55mm 2.8IS? Expensive, I know, but well worth it in the long run.
but w/o the IS would it be significnatly different?

For that range of focal lengths? Not really. IS becomes really useful when it's above 100mm in focal lengths. Or when the aperture is small.

the new 3rd gen IS system in the newer Canon lens are very aggressive and claims to cut 3 fstops.

Cutting 3 stops of shake does not mean a thing if my subject is moving fast and I require f/2.8 in order to have a shutter speed to stop motion.

anyway the noisy autofocusing of tamron lens is literally noise (sound) rite? i think shd be ok for me as a start... so i shd get 40D body + tamron f2.8 17-50mm ?

40D body + Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 will be a good start. Play with this setup 1st before deciding on your next lenses. By then you should have an idea on what you need more. The usual accessories to get would be extra battery, CF card, cleaning kit, dry cabi, bag and UV filter(more to protect your front element). Other accessories you may want to consider would be tripod, flash, CPL battery grip etc, but these can get in the future when you are more sure of what you want and when you have more budget.

Yeah we're talking about audio noise, not chroma noise/whatever picture noise you get. You won't mind it as a photographer, but maybe in some circumstances others might not like it.

40D + 17-50 2.8 would be a good move. S$1550 + 600, gives you a S$650 leeway for other things if your budget is S$2.8k.

juz called MScolor.. they say they dun haf stock for the tamron 17-50mm lens for quite sometime oreadi due to problems... :(

didnt probe.. coz still at work didnt engage on phone too long...

Probe more. Also, read more before you spend 2.5k$ easily for something where you a) are not really sure what it is (USM, IS, constant aperture) and therefore b) don't know if you need it. I suggest you get the 40D and the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. That's a reasonable set and you can learn from it whether you need IS, USM and all the other stuff or not.
I have the Tamron 17-50 and I notice the noise during focusing but it doesn't bug me at all. It only occurs sometimes in low light / low contrast conditions. If I know the situation cannot even take this little noise I'll use manual focusing and the focus confirmation.
Filter or not - there are many discussions and opinions. Basically it's an insurance: you buy it to prevent something more expensive happening. It's rather a personal preference than a photo-technical issue here. But it can become an issue (vignetting due to filter stacking).
Get two CF cards instead of only one. It's better to have a backup card and not putting all pictures on one. The Canon standard bag will be enough for this setup.
Regarding drybox ... I saw one offer in Buy & Sell here, 30L. That's enough for a start and will even be sufficient for the next 2 lenses. Nothing wrong with getting 2nd hand, they usually come with 5yrs local warranty and the reports here about repair cases sound good (fast and good response).
Go and enjoy taking pictures before you gear up with more equipment. Buy only what you really need and you what you cannot overcome by other means. A tripod is more useful for night shoots than any lens (and also cheaper).

After all its still best to get tamron 17-50mm lens than canon 18-55mm lens right?

There will never be one best option. It's what works for you.

A bird photographer (taking this example to the extreme) will jump this lens, because unless he/she shoots other things in his/her spare time, this lens is not going to be of much use to him/her.

shd i buy the 40D body frm MS den buy my lens n other stuff at Orient as the price there seems to be a better deal?

Technically it is possible. But what you might safe in $$ you will have to add in time and efforts. It's your call. Also, check if you compare apples to apples - grey sets are cheaper but have lower warranty levels.
We will not spoonfeed you about what you should do and should not do. Make your own decisions, there were plenty of hints and ideas in the posts above. If you don't have enough knowledge / information to make own decisions than just don't do anything but learn and read more.

that sounds like an idea. If the lack of Canon local warranty is not an issue for you, get everything from Orient la. Save yourself the trouble. They provide shop warranty anyway.

ok. after much consideration n calling up i decide to buy it at AP funan over the weekend.. reconsolidated my to-buy list

- 40D body
- tamron 17-50mm 2.8f
- SanDisk CF card Extreme III 4GB
- Giotto Rocket Blower
- 3rd Party Battery
- Digicabi 30l
- Bag
- maybe get the extd warranty just for the 50mm 18.f lens
- 3x UV filters (one for each lens)

decide to get 55-200mm only after playing ard with current setup for maybe 1-2mths... same goes for the flash unit...

did i miss out any essential stuff?

if you are getting the extended warranty JUST for the 50mm F1.8 lens, don't. The lense outside is $120. Extended warranty for the 40D is $250.
