if you are getting the extended warranty JUST for the 50mm F1.8 lens, don't. The lense outside is $120. Extended warranty for the 40D is $250.

If u intend to get 2 more years waranty, then its worth..... 50mm f1.8 really a high Cp lense... then like just pay 130 for extra 2 yr warranty....

ok. after much consideration n calling up i decide to buy it at AP funan over the weekend.. reconsolidated my to-buy list

- 40D body
- tamron 17-50mm 2.8f
- SanDisk CF card Extreme III 4GB
- Giotto Rocket Blower
- 3rd Party Battery
- Digicabi 30l
- Bag
- maybe get the extd warranty just for the 50mm 18.f lens
- 3x UV filters (one for each lens)

decide to get 55-200mm only after playing ard with current setup for maybe 1-2mths... same goes for the flash unit...

did i miss out any essential stuff?

Think you only need 2 UV filter now, since you are only getting 2 lenses 1st. Get the 3rd together with your next lens purchase.

lol.. out of my budget... think tamron 1 will suffice for nw...

make sure you test your copy properly... mine was very soft the other time when i had gotten it... it has to be sent baq to Japan... waited for 3 weeks before it came baq...

Hi,

I've read this tread and its been v helpful to me as well.

I will be pulling for a 40D in a while and instead of creating another tread, maybe I can add on to yours. I hope TS doesn't mind.

My usage will be a bit different from yours, I like to take landscape pics mostly when travelling and food pics/indoor occasionally at gatherings. I also like to take night shots of cities etc.

So this is what I was thinking of getting.

Canon EOS 40D body 1599
Lenses
EF 24mm f/2.8 550
Tokina AT-X 11-16mm f/2.8 Pro DX: $888
EF 50mm f/1.8 II : $120
Bag 150
Tripod 150
Blower 30
Battery 30
Dry cab 150

Approx prices are listed down. Do I need a regular zoom lens? ( Tammy 17-50 f/2.8 ) I'm really not too sure if I'd use it much, although it does seem rather practical. I'd appreciate suggestions. Budget will be below 4k.

I like the idea of using the tokina as a walkaround lens. I think I'd get a siggy 30 f1.4 instead of the canon 24mm, imo

I'm possibly getting a 30 f1.4 sigma too. But I think for lightice, he's getting 50mm f1.8 so that sigma might be too close. The 24mm probably more useful for him.

Cutting 3 stops of shake does not mean a thing if my subject is moving fast and I require f/2.8 in order to have a shutter speed to stop motion.

Think he's only stating a fact.

IS is a tool. As a photographer, one has to know when to use it and where it will be effective.

Even if you have f/2.8, it doesn't mean you can stop motion.

So as with all things in life, there are pros and cons and one has to know how to control the factors that go into producing the final image.

*clap clap*!!!

The sig 30mm f/1.4 sounds like a good idea, but I want a prime wide lens for taking architecture and landscape. That is in addition to the 11-16 tokina though.

Will be going to Tokyo next mth... looking at the price list in this section, look like the price is the same in jap and sg... anyone has the latest price in jap? Still wondering to buy in sg or jap...

40D? Think about whether you need the support and service or not. You should be comparing Jap prices with Grey prices here.

11-16 very wide, should be good for architecture, landscape. for architecture, if you want to take from inside and need wider than 11, then why not try fisheye(some people do not like its effect). if the outside of building, than the 24 f/2.8 is ok, if you are serious then maybe TS-E lens??? ex though:dunno:

If very very serious, then will have to be FF already.

I'll be taking external pics, not inside of buildings.

I'm not too keen on having a fisheye lens though, but I'll try the 11-16, i'm sure it'll fit very well for landscape pics.

Can anyone advice me if not having a 'regular' zoom lens will sorta cripple my casual photo taking?

Meaning for regular photo journalism of my travels. i.e 17/18 - 50/55 mm lens.

I'll say that more often than not, 11-16mm is not a very flattering focal length to shoot people, unless you include a lot of the background. Going close for a tighter shot is not viable, due to the inherent distortion of an ultrawide. If it bothers you, get a cheaper 35mm or 50mm just for people, then leave the ultrawide on for scenery shots.

I'll be getting a 50mm f/1.8 as well.

Thanks!

This should suffice very well if you shoot pple outdoors. Should even do a small group comfortably.
