The "ignored and unprotected" vulnerables.....

I can't see how Philipines can get out of their misery.

They have been cursed with successive corrupted leaders.

When LKY once told LTK in parliament to "look around you" he precisely meant that.

Once the corruption political culture settle in. It is difficult to get rid of it.
Because everyone think it is "normal".

I think there are many causes for human misery, including natural disasters. Singapore is not exactly corruption free, even CPIB has its in-house cases. Other cou tries have their Yakuza, Mafia, etc. it is a cursed world indeed and the happiest people are in Nigeria. :)

Wikipedia table of helicopter assets of Philippines government (excluding privately owned helicopters by tycoons). They have many.
The helicopters could have been used to immediately send emergency food & medicine supplies to outlying stricken areas. If they were not deployed, then they should have been.

Why must the Philippines president wait many days for the USS Washington aircraft carrier and the UK aircraft carrier to bring their helicopters?

Why must the Philippines president do nothing & wait many days for the USS Washington aircraft carrier and the UK aircraft carrier to bring their helicopters?

Most of the helicopters are bought 2nd hand from other countries and their air force lack money to properly maintain them. Helicopters are more expensive to maintain then fixed wing aircraft :(

Current tally of aid by some nations:

These are pledges. Not actual amount already given.

The more solid immediate help is the physical presence of aircraft carriers, helicopters, planes, soldiers, medical staff, food supplies.

• Australia: A$30m ($28m) package, including medical staff, shelter materials, water containers and hygiene kits

• USA $20m in humanitarian aid, 90 marines, aircraft carrier plus logistics support

• UK $16m (£10m) package including emergency shelter, water and household items, plus HMS Daring support

• European Commission: $11m

• Japan $10m, including tents and blankets. Pledged up to 1,000 soldiers, 25-person medical team already sent

• UAE $10m in humanitarian aid

• Indonesia: Logistical aid including aircraft, food, generators and medicine

• Israel 148-person team, including search, rescue and medical services; field hospital with 100 tonnes of aid

• Asian Development Bank: $500m emergency loans and $23m in grants

• China: 10m yuan ($1.6m; £1m) in relief goods plus $200,000 (£120,000) from government and Red Cross
(initially $100,000 but increased amount after criticism by several countries' media)

Great source you have there!! Wikipedia!

Not all of the choppers are functioning mind you.

Plus some are being used for the counter insurgency operations (rebels, etc) and you can't just pull it out.

Actually, there are many mega rich tycoons in Philippines too. They would own private helicopters. And of course the president has his own fleet of helicopters which we presume are functioning.

And thanks to Singapore as well for sending in your C-130 to airlift supplies & evacuees!

There is thing which is beyond us. i.e: How the rich and powerful use their helicopters, food stockpile, donation $, etc.

Let's do what's within our strength. Whether the goodwill is misused later, it's no longer our sin.

Not all the helicopter are design to carry heavy load of goods and travel long distance.

Using aircraft that is not suitable for the job will only create more problems :(

USA has done very well in coming to the rescue fast, having the necessary hardware and manpower, being able to plan and execute the necessary relief operations; when the Philippines government seemed lost and unable to deal with the situation. USA has demonstrated that when push comes to shove, it can take care of its ally, Philippines. This is soft power. The absence of PRC rescue personnel and initial paltry $100,000 pledge by PRC has not gone un-noticed.

USA have many years of experiences doing humanitarian assistance using the aircraft carriers.

China is also building aircraft carriers and have also bought one from Ukraine. However, Philippines government would be terrified to see the Chinese carrier because the China have claim over the Spratly Islands, which the Philippines also claim to own.
