The floods

Yeah, i bought the NTUC mobile equipment insurance... Just gotta take pictures and write a short report on how the flooding happened and you can claim for flooding...

Sorry. Can elaborate? How much can we claim for? Both housing and camera?

You have to buy the insurance within 6 months of purchase...

I claimed about 50-60% of my camera's value that i paid for iirc...

There's depreciation of a certain percentage after every month which explains the % that you can claim...

It covers flooding, theft, and quite a few other things (I don't really remember the whole list, hehe), all with different percentages that you can claim...

you can check it out at the NTUC webby... which currently seems to be down... :dunno: whether they still have it...

Would like to know how many Scuba Divers here do the same ?? I normally only grease the 'O' ring once before the 1st dive and not re-gease at all till my trip is over (unless there is a 'near' flooding). I've always thought that you need not keep greasing your 'O' ring again and again.... Could anyone share more on this ??

Hmm, initially when I went diving with a cam for the first time, I religiously clean & re-grease my gear's o-ring.. Then a fellow diver staying with us asked me why I kept re-greasing and taught me not to overdo it.

I now only grease to store, degrease just before I set up the cam for the dive and never do anything until the end of the trip. In between battery changes, I check for dirt and seal. And do minor cleaning with a soft tissue if necessary (but never grease!).. I also do dunk test religiously before every dive..

i think there is a video on fins blog by tony wu on camera housing maintainance ...
Yes, there's a podcast you can grab off itunes or the website I think? That was where I learn.. but it doesn't mention what to do post dive or in between dives.. this is best to ask the older more season divers who carry lotsa cam gears along on the boat.. lol..

Same same here...... But I do grease 1 more time (lightly) before putting the 'O' ring onto the casing. But just like you, I don't re-grease in-between dives or changing of batteries. Just check for dirts & hairs.....

The only time that I got a near flooding was at Bali's Tulamben.... Since that area is mostly shore diving.... and we have to get in/out of the water from the rocky beach (with very fine black sand under the rocks). Some grains of black sands go onto the 'O' ring. Which causes a small leak on my 7th dive at the House Reef, luckily..... the House Reef wasn't deep and at around 6-7metres, 10mins into the dive.... I spotted that small pool of water inside the Canon U/W casing. Caught up with my DM and inform him I'm going back to the shore.

Since the small pool of water didn't touch the camera at all, nothing broke down. After cleaning up..... all was fine and working again. Hahaha..... even made a 39metre dive for Mola Mola with that same camera a few days later :sweatsm:

So far sounds like sound advice given. I'll just add a bit more. After diving when dumping the camera into a fresh water basin, I wouldn't leave it there too long. You just need to rinse off the excess saltwater. A lot of floodings also occur in the washbasins where there are many cameras lying around or other divers carelessly dump their cameras in.

At the end of a trip, it'll be good to soak the housing in a basin of warm water for a while to dissolve and loosen any salt particle build-up, operate all the buttons on the housing to force the saltwater stuck there out and fresh water can go in. Then you can dry out the housing, operate the buttons again to get rid of water stuck at the button area and store the housing.

yes i have to agree on this...it's a "RINSE" tank...not a "SOAK & WAIT FOR FLOODS TO HAPPEN" tank. leaving your cameras in the rinse tank the whole day is just asking for it. wait till some irresponsible and inconsiderate guy like me plonks his heavy setup right on top of your petite canon ixus housing! then people can complain that canon housings suck again. haha

Just thought of this and forgot to add it in. You might want to consider putting some grease on a thoothpick and try to put it around the area where the housing buttons go into the housing itself. Push the buttons a bit to try to work the grease into the place where the button's o-rings are to keep it supple.

Yup.... never thought of that. I just sometimes, dump my gears into the tank and not check to see if others are dumping their gears onto mine. Time that I take care of this mistake.

Hahaha..... something I forgetten to add. Let the soak long enough inside the tank of water (to remove salt) before opening the casing to change batteries or remove the camera.

Btw...... Would like to find out how difference ppl here Store their 'O' Rings...

I normally remove the 'O' ring from the casing after a trip, and store it inside a zip-lock bag after I clean and re-grease it. The 'O' ring is kept under my bed inside a Pelican case. When I need to use the U/W casing..... I remove the old grease from the 'O' ring before greasing lightly and replacing the Ring onto the casing before the first dive.....

The status of the G9 :(
Can be turned on but will only take pics in bright light. Anytime it requires flash the unit refuses to fire.

Still searching for a bargain second hand G9 to replace and will probably look for 3rd party housing.

Sighhhh

is it just me or there isn't many selling off their g9s.. can hardly find a second hand one. Someone here's selling off hers though. Went to Best and saw the G9 and G10 side by side. Who will buy the G9 when it's priced higher than the latter? Doesn't make much sense to me..

I think the pricing of G10 is kinda screwing with the 2nd hand market for G9. Grrrrr

Does NTUC still have it? I just searched on web but cant find it.

Mr freonmind is now the proud new owner of a second hand setup G9 + Ikelite bought from meimei7.

Now if he floods this setup too then he will just have to kill himself.

Touch wood touch wood..... :nono:

This time don't over grease the 'O' Ring again :bsmilie:

Hi guys

I just got a second-hand G9 Canon Housing. I got it tested today (in a swimming pool - the best place I can think off), and i was wondering whether it is possible for floodings to be caused by rusted screws at the lens area. Was testing it for a while and saw small tiny droplets of water inside.

Where can i get the screws replaced?
