Thanks man. Wish I'd had a more psychedlic backdrop but was happy with the results. I was taking shots as people arrived at a function so it was pretty hectic with hardly any time to pose the guests. Just got them on the bike and snapped!

care to share how's the workflow like? i tried the high pass filter and the dave hill workflow on flickr... really grossed at the end results.

I used that flickr workflow (with two highpass filters, a gaussian blur and then strong unsharp mask) and have found that it works on some shots and not on others. Sometimes use some history brush to reduce effect on eyes and other features.

Been playing around with HDR and DHE and will post some examples soon. The shoot was done for a band signed to a record label and can't post until I get permission from them.

how was ur light setup like for the above shot?

Personally I feel this is a very bad piece of PP, nowhere near Dave Hill. One of those best kept for own consumption. The highlights are all lost, there's no more texture left. Nevermind that the lighting wasn't sufficient for such a large "set"

The haloing is disturbing. You can't find even a single bit of haloing in Dave Hill's images.

On a separate note:

In another forum Dave Hill has mentioned he does NOT use HDR.
He was also most insulted that people thinks he uses LucisArt.

If you have actually looked Dave Hill's images, it'll be impossible to get his style of image processing with normal photos. His attention to lighting is amazing. For every image I see at least 4 different light sources. He definitely shot his images with his post processing in mind, rather than shoot and hope that he can process it.

As they say, rubbish in, rubbish out. You want to do something of his style, you better get the raw stuff correct 1st, and that's the photography part..

Wow Unseen, you really know how to come in and trash someone's work don't you! I go from Drumma's "wow" to your "very bad piece of PP".

Of course I have looked at Dave Hill's work and of course I know this is nowhere close to what he produces. In a previous post I explained that. I know he doesn't use HDR but that does not mean I should not experiment with it.

Your condescending and negative comments are noted. Can't wait to see something from you.

well, i actually think is quite a good effort personally.. i certainly wouldnt have a clue about how to get anything even close to that.

I was trying to inmitate your work somehow can't measure up.

Uncle, Your over sharpening never fails to give me a headache. If you like, you can start a "Other Than DH Effect" thread. It is not nice to OT and declare it is an OT.

I'm sorry if you found it condescending, but it's disturbing that you couldn't even spend 10 seconds to remove the haloing. After all, you've already spent 2 minutes on it, what's another 10 seconds? If you want to show something to others, at least put some effort into making it presentable.

I found the shot fantastic, but the PP really killed it.
It's just bad PP, other than the usual clubsnap disease of calling every piece of work "fantastic", I've no explanation for many of the comments.

It's just like how I can't explain why most photographers cannot spot BAD haloing in the sharpened images, that they actually put it up for public comsumption, other than that they simply do not have the eye for details.

This is great but his poor teeth....

Here's my weak attempt on the so called 'Dave Hill effect'. Sorry about the subject though. My elder bro was caught unaware while he was playing his favourite game. I used two flash. One with a white bounce umbrella and the other just direct flash.

Just some thoughts: Lighting and composition plays a very important part to Dave Hill photos. His post-production seems to be all about tweaking highlights and shadows. There's tonnes of tutorials about it. Just google light painting tutorials. Hope that helps.

Yes, lightings is very very important. By the way, the above pic, try killing the whiteness more. (Simply method: go level, drag the max white slider nearer to the center.) That shall improve the contrast. (For the above case)

hmm I tried the lucis plugin however it seems like it's buggy. looks fine on the preview screen however when applied it looks totally different and over-ly processed. anyone got the same problem?
