Hi guys i plan to shoot the thaipusam this year at about 12am till morning. Will be using a 50/1.4 mostly.

I currently have with me an 800 speed negative. Is that fast enough? Im contemplating either using that or tri-x pushed to 1600/3200.

If i want to shoot color, what other fast films u guys recommend? And based on experience (if any) would 800 be fast enough?

Thanks in advance. Not sure if i should post this here or the darkrooom section.

Based on my experience last year, probably not fast enough. Some corners of the temple can be quite dark, but the general area is relatively bright and isa800 may still be ok. Just shoot B&W pushed 1600 lah.

Guys, if you need recipes for pushing tri x to 3200 with acceptable results, happy to help. This may ease the stress of deciding. :)

I think B&W pushed is a must, planning to use Tri-x and neopan. For colour neg I think Superia 1600? RWC tried it last year with really good results.

thanks Cactus Jack for the thread. looked through it and most shot at 1600. all your pics are awesome. will be damn paiseh to post mine up when i shoot them this year.

so list of films used:
1. superia 1600 (RWC mentioned a shop at bras basah, will have to make that looong trip down to find out)
2. tri-x pushed (i assume Ruby sells single rolls, since if i recall most of you get your bulk rolls there)
3. ZoomP used a 400 speed film, tempting if i have more than 1 body but no.
4. i know someone selling ektachrome p1600 but expired. risky to use expired film? plus wouldnt really be able to rate it at 1600 if its expired right?
5. provia 400x pushed to 1600.

will have to start hunting to find those films. thanks in advance for all the help guys.

1. I think Triple D at burlington square sells them as well. Not sure about Konata

4. erm depends how expired... I usually wouldnt risk losing shots on expired film.... shoot 1/2 to one stop over depending on how expired the film is.

5. bro, you got expensive taste! :bsmilie:

Hmm, I just tried 2 rolls of 2009 exp superia 400 rated at 400, no problems the colours still came out alright!

I just realised 5 is 16+ per roll! Cannot afford. Hahaha.

Yeah will be calling around later today to ask.

Really have no idea what to expect regarding film price. Only been shooting with lucky, superia and kodak gold.

Provia 400x is about SGD16.9

Processing at Fotohub - SGD7 I think..... Push 2 stops, $4. Its $ 2 per stop...

total cost estimated: SGD28

Can buy one bottle HC-110 still got change :bsmilie:

Could you share the recipe? ;p

No worries, glad I could help before you take the dive to go full out for Provia 400x.

Dont get me wrong, it is an excellent film. I love Provia & velvia. Good to try a roll actually but not entirely the entire Thaipusam on Provia 400x pushed to 1600 unless you got the $$ to burn ;)

wow... good that Thaipusam is coming again. I remembered it was the event that finally tied up most of the RF users in SG back then :bsmilie:

Surely this time round we will have overwhelmingly good response again and more RF users attending.

Anyway just to share on this amazing Provia 400X which is my fave slide of all time. It has the richest colours and is best used in the dark alley or to achieve a cinematic feel. My fave setting is to expose this film at 1600 and later push it in the lab to pump the colours up. Very fine micro details can be seen across the entire image but surely it is the colour that draws me to it... So do consider it for this Thaipusam if you are not shooting fanatically. Anyway the most you might expose is 3 rolls. If it gives you the best, why not? Just shoot sparely and you will be sure to get some wonderful cinematic pictures...

Of course I find Iford 3200 a very appropriate film to use for Thaipusam also. Superia is nice but I find the colours to be very funny. Maybe I just prefer cooler tones and the grains... Colours with grains is not really good for me but of course this is subjective. Provia is the "cleanest" so far... "Almost digital but still renders like a film" if I have to sum it up in 1 line. Aiyo, I'm like the promoter for Provia 400. haha

Hi Francis,
You have already pushed 2 stops @ 1600...how do you "push it in the lab" ? You mean you ask Fotohub to develop it at 3 stops?

now u make me gian/itchy to try. but till i get my technique down pat, dont want to splurge on film yet lah. just try the affordable stuff. still a poor student with 1 more year of education to go!

anyways for those who are planning to go for thaipusam this year, i read an article in the papers that the first kavadi will push off 15minutes before midnight. meaning 2345hrs 19th january wednesday night all the way till 1800hrs 20th thursday. just fyi for those who plan to go.

hey, i expose the film at 1600 doesnt mean the lab will push for me. So, i have to ask the lab to "push 2 stops" to 1600 else they will process it at 400iso by default :) Maximum push for slide is 2stops..
