Do you guys use a tripod to shoot those sharp pictures? Can you hand hold and shoot with this lens?

depends on situation, unless it's really low light and ur shutter speed is very slow then prob so. otherwise, it be handheld.

practise more and i'm sure you can do it handheld to get these sharp pics...

Cheers....:)

Haha that's true... Thanks for your opinion, having heard I feel more confident in getting this lens. I guess having a faster lens beats a slow lens with IS (like the 18-55 Kit lens)

It depends on your purpose and what exactly you are shooting.

Having a fast lens without IS does not mean it beats a slow lens with IS.

yeah but i guess will be slightly more versatile cos even with IS u still cannot freeze a person in motion if ur shuttle speed is too slow... :)

Yeah... With that kind of shutter speeds you should be able to handhold :D

entropy is right. You need to know the specific usage. A fast lens may not always be what is needed. In this case it may not be so obvious, but travelling with a 18-55 IS or VR, compared to travelling with a monstrous 17-55 f/2.8 should illustrate to you how much of a trade off you want in terms of weight vs. performance.

When you are travelling, sometimes you don't want to get weighed down, and a 18-55 IS/VR will suffice, given another lightweight, fast prime as a complementing lens.

Oh, and you can't use shuttles to freeze motion. Our cameras have no shuttles.

The built in motor works likes a AFS or is it more like AFD ? IE can you adjust focus manually while in AF mode or must you switch over to manual focus mode to use manual focus.

grin for my money a fast lens beat IS most of the time since there can be issues with IS scambling the shot. It is no joy to suddenly be holding a vibrator and not a lens.

No override. You have to switch to manual focus.

I'm sorry but i find it unsharp (due to handshake?). It almost looked as if the leave on the left is focused instead.

But my main reason to post this to ask this question:

I thought this lens should produce better bokeh then my trusty Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 (which I think has the same number of blades but not circular apertures) but the sample does not appear to show that.

I have on the look out for the Sigma successor but this Tamron is yet to convince me.

Any good arguments out there?

Handshake... probably slow shutter.

my contribution for this wonderful lens!
