Olympus Colours - Show Your Blues, Greens and Reds! by drakon09

I'm starting this thread for us to show off the famed Oly colours.

Also Hacker was commenting there was hardly any photos posted nowadays; I concur.

At the same time, there's a lot of interest in the Oly E-System recently. What better way to convince others than to show what the E-System is capable of?

Pics in the next post.

DISCLAIMER: If the photos do suck, do be reminded that it is purely the fault of the photographer; in no way is the camera responsible for taking them.

Now I know how to fool the focus indicator LED!!! - by OlyFlyer

While everybody else is occupied with the introduction of the E-510, I felt I also needed something innovative to play with... so I started to play with my E-500 and my EX-41 in another stupid combination.

I had this crazy idea for a long time but never really had time to test it out fully. The idea is to make the camera believe it has a proper ZD lens attached to it, while in reality it has an OMZ lens. I believed that it would make the focus LED work as it is working with ZD lenses.

Tonight I started again to fiddle with my modified ring. This time I attached my OMZ 35mm to the OM end of the ring and the 40-150mm to the E-system end of the ring. Just like I assumed, the focusing indicator LED is working 100% of the time. I took several shots and all are in perfect focus. Here is one picture taken through my usual mirror to show my camera. Looking at exif says the lens is a 40mm lens (false) and the aperture is f8.0 (true). To get the right exposure the OMZ lens must have the same aperture set as the camera is indicating and then manually must stop down by pressing the stop down button on the lens. Not an easy task holding the 40-150mm with part of my EX-41 attached to it, half pressing the shutter button to get the AF indication and while holding the shutter, pressing the stop down button and than finally full preassure on the shutter release button. So it is definitely not something I would like to do outside my lab environment...

Third Party Vertical Grip for E330/E400/E500/E510 by say123

Just to share this info I came across on the internet. :)

http://www.ownuser.com.tw/

microcosm adds : This thread discusses 3rd party developer/manufacturer Ownuser Co Ltd's continued development of vertical grip/battery holder for the entry level range of DSLR cameras that Olympus no longer supports. This is good news for Olympus users who are used to shooting portraits and having a vertical grips means the world to your style of shooting. Makes a good read and reference. Thanks to those who have contributed to the thread.

Just for reference. Prices of Olympus Cameras and Lenses in Beijing, China.

This is one of the dealers over in Beijing. Their website will give you a ballpark figure of what is the asking price for Olympus E-System in Beijing.

4/3 budget portrait lens? by monkeyjopaw
Hello 4/3 masters,

my sister is planning a budget wedding (long story), and since i'm the only one in the family with an slr, she assigned me as the photographer. one of the things she is planning as a souvenir is a picture of the couple with the guests, to be printed there and then.

my current setup: E500, dual kit lenses, FL50. dilemma is, i don't think my current setup allows the nice DOF for portraits (she's also planning to get one of those professional-looking backdrops, btw).

also, since my phone recently got busted, i also need to get a hand phone. so im kinda on a tight budget.

what would you guys suggest?

Cost of replacing Shutter Unit by troyjbon

I believe that shutter count for most E system can last up to 50,000 times after which it is recommended to be changed.

Anyone knows how much would it cost to replace a shutter unit for our E systems in Singapore? Does it covers in the warranty?

I'm using E510 and if some of us can quote for several E models, it would be a great !!

Color Space and FL-50R by samcklee

Hi All,

I just got my 50R and while playing with it.... I noticed that when I use the FL-50R with sRGB everything is fine. When I change over to Adobe space, with all other setting same, image capture is little over-exposed by around +0.7EV. Is this normal when using Adobe color space?

By the way, which color space you guys use normally? I am using Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0. It can't read E3 raw file but easy to use. Other then CS, any cheap and good software you guys use and better still, can read E3's raw file.

thanks in advance

sam

HELP! serious....e330 by ozkid88

hi fellow oly users!

i'm currently using an oly e330 and recently, there seems to be this count down shots.
(e.g. the amt of shots left on a memory card is 300, i take 3 pictures and delete them, but instead of the number going back to 300, it is not at 297! and it keeps dropping.)

initially i tot it was the memory card problem but after i changed the card, it still shows the same number!! is it the count down to how many shutter there is left before i have to change??

tried using XD cards as well but still the same number appears,297 and keeps dropping as i take more pictures to try out...

den i tried restarting the whole camera, and it still din help... at my wits end...

this is freaking me out, my wife is counting down!! ahhh help... any advice?

E-3 IS starting to malfunction? - by cjtune

Today I witnessed my E-3's IS malfunction.

After 200+ shots, suddenly the next 20-30 IS mode 1 pics all turned out blurry, even when the 1/(2*f) reciprocal rule shutter speed threshold was met with good margin. I could feel and even hear the moving sensor frame knocking sharply sideways towards my right hand/battery compartment at the end of every shot. "Thock!" it goes. Shooting in IS mode 2 was OK so it might be only the horizontal IS servo movements that went haywire. Turning off and on the power switch on the E-3 so that the IS servo motors do their 'reset dance' before shutdown couldn't make it well again - I tried this multiple times. Switched off IS and continued shooting for the next 40-50 pics or so, and to my surprise later, mode 1 IS recovered and it went on to function fine for the next couple of hundred shots (quite a number were small aperture for large DOF and thus low shutter speed) and still remains OK as of this time of posting, without any noticeable degradation in performance (can still hit the lowest usable shutter speed I can remember given focal length, eg. 1/15 sec at 54mm).

Wasn't knocking it around, battery wasn't low, didn't get it wet, wasn't cold, didn't expose it long under sunlight (it wasn't a hot day anyway), wasn't under high-tension electrical wires, dunno if there's any solar flare or not... but I was shooting at an elevation of about 1500 above sea level (Fraser's Hill in Malaysia). E-3 total shutter count about 6600.

Not sure if this is a one-off problem, or the first of many-to-come intermittent IS failures for my E-3. It should have just failed permanently on the spot today so that I can easily just pass it to Oly support as a definite proof and they can as easily diagnose and fix the problem and less likely to return to me later with a NTF (No Trouble Found) conclusion.

Let this be a heads-up for all owners of E-3's, in case you experience the same sort of IS failure in the future.

Also, by diCam :

Report the issue. My experience with the service centre is good so far. It's concern my 12-60mm SWD. The customer service officer/service engineer did not shrug and say "I see nothing wrong, sir". I'll post my opinion once things are sorted out.

Problems with current batch of Olympus cameras - by microcosm

This is NOT an Olympus bashing thread. So, there will be no tolerance for anyone who posts "So you see, you are better off using (another brand)..." but more of a thread where users can share their findings and also help would be buyers be made aware that there are problems with the current cameras and lenses and accessories.

Keeping this thread open also helps Olympus (if they are coming in here to read) to know that the user base are facing this issue and with a healthy feedback in place, they can push for a faster firmware update/solution to the problem that will help the community as a whole.

Once again, flame baits be warned, this is an informative thread, not one to discuss what is better than what...

Problem with E510(Hot pixel?) - by slypower50

Hi all, recently just brought the E510 from a bro here.. was happy with the camera until one day when i took some night pic then i discover this issue.. Does a search and it is more commonly known as hot pixel ( please correct me if i am wrong ) Not sure if it is a problem with E510 coz i had seen several same issue online..
Need advise from users on what to do if you are too experiencing this.
Had tried the following :
1) Tried using different lens
2) Using pixel mapping ( at least 3 times)
3) using NR

took the following pictures with the lenscap on.. To my horror, all like star wars..

first pic : ISO 100 , 8 sec , F3.5
