Tapeless solution for Canon XHA1

Hi all the experts

Can I ask what is the best tapeless solution I can possibly invest for my Canon XHA1? I have been involved in event shootings a fair bit lately and some of them call for very short turnaround for the edited video. Hence, I believe Tapeless solution may help in the process.

I've searched the forum for this, but have found pieces of info here and there (ie some on SD or harddisk solution). I know there's these Firestore (I heard its rather unstable) and possibly the Sony HDD solution, but they are rather expensive and I'm not certain it works well with my XHA1. I'm still not financially ready for XDCAM or P2 upgrade. Any good SD or CF solution for such recording?

I'm also looking for the solution that allow Camera to perform both Tape and Tapeless recording at the same time. The tape recording is good for archiving and as backup while the tapeless footages can be sent for editing immediately. Is there such solution?

Thanks and appreciate your advice. If I have missed any of the threads on this topic, pls help to refer me there. Thanks.

Regards

Since you are using XHA1 the Tapeless solution still fall on both Firestore and SONY DR60 HD recording. Both can be used. Firestore 1 of my friend had been using no problem with his XHA1. SONY DR60 cache recording may have some mni error.

The New SONY Z7 recording tape and CF card. All New Coming soon SONY again Z5. Check it out :D I myself use Firestore HD with Z1:thumbsup:

Hi KCBox

Thanks for the sharing. I'm considering Firestore too, but have had no opportunity to look at it deeper. Do you know where in Singapore I can check it up? As Expandore is no longer selling Firestore, I'm not sure where I can find and evaluate it. Thanks.

I was planning to get a DR60 for my XH-A1, but then I saw this is coming out soon.

It records on CF cards and for me looks like a better long-term buy compared to hard disk. Anyway I will be checking it out as soon as I can.

Hi Jaegersing

Thanks for the info, this is useful and seems to suit my need, except that it looks rather costly now and especially at its introduction stage. Will keep a lookout for it too. Thanks again.

I suggest you check out Firestore's situation first, before buying. Focus Enhancements went into Chapter 11 recently, but I'm not sure if some white knight has come to the rescue. Certainly Canon is now pushing Firestore with the new XH-A1S so it looks like the company hasn't gone bust yet.

And you can try Lachmi for Firestore. You need the FS-C for XH-A1. If you figure out how to mount it, please share.

For the price of firestore, you might as well get a laptop and do a direct capture. The price of a good laptop have fallen bellow the 2K mark.

it will not be practical for run and gun. But for control environment then a laptop with adobe onLocation will be fine.

Hi s3comms

Agree with Jopel, I need it for run and gun and Laptop does not seems practical. I need the device to be mounted either on the camera or the camera man (ie myself). Hence either Firestore or Sony's solution seems closer to what I need. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Jaegersing

Do you happen to know any dealer in Singapore carrying this product that I can ask to evaluate or for a quote? Or should I ask from Sony directly? Thanks.

Hi BMPhoto. I'm not sure how available this device is at the moment. There are guys at the DVInfo.net forums who have bought it, but B&H Photo don't have stock and are only accepting orders for it.

As far as Singapore is concerned, I'm waiting to hear from VideoCobra at VideoLifestyle about this. He is what is known as an EEA (extreme early adopter :) ) and has said he will check out the HVRMRC1K soon. By all means ask Sony about it, and please share with us what they say. I am trying not to rush into this, but I'm very interested and will definitely buy one if it works in 25F with my XH-A1 and 25P with my HV30.

Hi Richard

Seems that B&H Photo has the stock now. From the DVI forum thread, looks very promising for XHA1. I wonder whether I should buy from B&H and shipped it from US or to wait for a local dealer. Any advise?

Have you heard any dealer close to Sony or is bringing in this device? I'm actually quite rushing for it as I have no other alternative for tapeless solution at the moment (had intended to buy Firestore or DR60, but decided to put it on hold since this device is much more promising). I need it to help cut down my workflow, project turnaround time and preserve my cam's tape head only for recording and not for transfering footages. Thanks and appreciate your (and all other expert/EEA) advise.

PS. I have written to Sony Broadcast directly and digging around for Sony contact, but gotten no reply yet.

Hi Vincent. Personally I am not confortable to import hardware equipment, in case of failure and warranty hassles. But I know that some people do it with no problem so it is workable. In the end, you have to decide based on whether the cost saving is worth the risk, or in your case, whether there is no other way to get the unit when you need it.

I suggest you contact Derek Yeo (VideoCobra) at VideoLifestyle. He has a video production company and is often able to import stuff with local warranty. You can PM him or post a message to the forum. Here's the link-

Thank you Richard for the sharing, will keep a lookout at the videolifestyle forum.

I do notice that Dixon (aka DXNMedia) in another thread that he has managed to purchase it. Will ask him for his source if possible. Thanks.

Hey anyone considered the CitiDisk yet?

Hey anyone considered the CitiDisk yet?

I heard of it, but don't know much about it. Do you have any info to share? Anyway I think solid state is the way of the future so most likely I would not buy a HD based unit now unless the CF recorder is no good.
