Tamron SP 70-300mm F4-5.6 VC USD

I do wonder if it's worth paying 3x the price for faster AF. Is IQ much better? I would appreciate real usage feedback.

Thanks in advanced!

its much better than the cheaper Tamron version 70-300 Macro 1:2 hands down :-)

I was kidding mate. But I do like shooting without flash or tripod so tend to push the envelope in hand holding.

There are some user reviews here http://www.dyxum.com/reviews/lenses/reviews.asp?IDLens=595

Just some advice to the general community reading these posts. Not directed at you. Hope you do not misunderstand. Your post was my springboard.

I picked up better techniques after I found myself hating to lug a tripod along. Hee

i'm gonna get it for Macro and for tele. i saw samples of the Raynox 250 with it and it looks tremendously good. Also saw sample images with the Macro version of Tamron and the images were not up to standard. looks like my old setup with a superzoom prosumer with Nikon 4T.

If i get a DSLR might as well aim for DSLR quality images. i think? our shots IQ is only as good as the glass we put on.

Woo.. Just got the lens during the weekends to be used with my d700...

Its a really awesome lens! Sharp wide open and the price is just a fraction of nikon's version...

I believe i got a nice copy of the lens...

is this lens still found in shop in sg ??

what is the price ?

It is actually quite new and yes still in shops. Takes amazing pictures around 100-270 range. Takes good pictures at the extremes plus some PP.

To me... It's very very heavy though. If weight is an issue, maybe 18-270 pzd can be considered too.

Noticed this thread has died down a little.
I am still using this lens for some of my travels and it is wonderful for the price point!
But I really wonder why this lens has dropped drastically in price... especially in terms of resale value...
I was contemplating upgrading to a Sigma 50-150 2.8 OS for closer shots (and perhaps pairing with a 1.4x or 2x teleconvertor) but now I don't even feel like upgrading since firstly this lens satisfies everything I need as an advanced amateur and financially it doesn't make sense haha!

This lens is a fantastic lens, sharp image, great for shooting wildlife and birds.

Just to share:

i recently sent the lens in due to it making some weird sounds. The person made some improvements (at least i think its improved)
1. the firmware was upgraded. Previously in some situations the lens may not focus and just stop trying within 1 sec. Now i can hear the motor inside keep trying for a good 3-5 seconds while its half pressed and the focus is more able to lock now.
2. i also feedback to the engineer that i use a certain range more frequently than others, if it can be optimised as upon comparison with another copy its not as sharp. Now its quite good.
3. Now the lens intelligently chooses the closest object to focus on even if its quite off centre. of course, the camera focus mode is on wide/intelligent for this to happen. This does not always happen before.

Please do not forget, this lens is a slow lens, so i am just happy that it performs much better now in the same conditions that gave me trouble.

These are my experiences with the upgraded lens. Some may claim i'm dreaming because some are more of camera related rather than lens related, but i stand firm on what i experience.

Cheers!

Hi guys, I'm thinking of getting this lens.

I've read from a few sites that

1) there is an issue with dust getting sucked when zooming.
2) there are issues with QA and ppl have gone through a few lens before getting a good copy

Anyone faced such issues or have major problems with it? Anything I should know before making a purchase?
