Tamron SP 70-300mm F4-5.6 VC USD

how is this lens compared to the

Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro Zoom Lens?

I thought the only diff is the VC and i'm using sony.. So the VC is not a factor.. Hmmm.. anyone can advise? :)

They are both very different optically.

Personally had been through 2 bad copies, fortunately the 3rd one is fine, lens is sharp but somewhat let down by poor QA.

The image I took from this lens at 300mm after cropped is a bit pixel. =[

I just got this lens - but there is a strange phenomena for my copy.
When seen through the viewfinder, it seems like I am looking through a matte (some visible roughness) film, as compared to my other lenses (eg. Canon 55-250mm, 50mm) which are totally CLEAR.

I took off the filter to check, and determined that the filter was not the problem.
Looked at both end of the lens and nothing strange was visible.
However the images that I have shot with the lens turn out to be sharp and have no problems.

Wanted to check with fellow users - do you guys see anything different through your viewfinders for this lens?

You're not the only one..I too have this problem.
Actually, i dun think it's the lens…it's the camera.
It's only more obvious when you zoom into a white background…
It doesn't affect the photo quality at all.
In fact, i believe it is also there with any lens…just because this is 300mm, it becomes more obvious :) Try using your 250mm and zoom at a white wall…i think you will see the same roughness

Aha! It's good to know I am not alone!
I have been perplexed (and a little frustrated) at being unable to understand why this is happening (and especially if it is only happening to ME!)
Will try with my 250mm again and compare carefully - though the last time I checked I thought my other lenses all looked clear!
Thanks!

Lemme know what you found :) When i first noticed it, i though the lens dirty, i clean front and back, still there..i even ended up cleaning my focus screen on the camera and blowing the sensor…Still there…
Then i tried with another lens…and true enough, i saw on that lens too just not as obvious so i just learnt to ignore it..After all, the photos do not have that roughness on them.

I tried looking through my 55-250mm at an off-white wall - can't really see any roughness!
But perhaps it was due to the lighting (room lamp at night)... will try it again this weekend when I get time during the day!
Perhaps it's just best to ignore it anyway since like you mentioned, the photos are not affected in terms of IQ. :D

Me too, I am getting that matte like texture through the viewfinder, but the photos don't have that problem!

So Spin and I aren't the only ones!
(Thank goodness... haha!)

I just gotten this lens with Sony mount. Sadly the Sony version Tamron opted to remove the VC would be nice if you could choose between in body IS or Lens. Anyways lens is very good real value for money specially the price of Sony 70-300G is twice the price of Tammy

Sharp lens very silent AF build wise, like all tamron lenses are good... Paired this lens with A77 and it was a real joy to use =) here's some handheld sample shots crop a bit

Beautiful shots... I really need to find better use for my 70-300...
I find myself too conscious somedays when using it since it is such a HUGE lens... and with the lens hood on it's like I am some paparazzi photographer... LOL

From this website: Tamron Lens: Zooms - Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD SP AF (Tested) - SLRgear.com!
"Nikon 70-300mm ƒ/4.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S VR
One of Nikon's better lenses, the Nikon offers superior sharpness, but poorer CA performance, when compared to the Tamron. We haven't had an opportunity yet to test this lens on a full-frame body. Otherwise, both lenses feature USM style focusing and image stabilization."

After months of sitting in my dry cab..i finally took this lens out because well, i was required to use a 70-200 minimum for a portrait shoot and all i had was this telephoto lens so i used it…
I was expecting it to be horrible since almost eveyone there was using a 70-200 f2.8 and i was using this inferior lens :)
However, although not perfect and me being a first timer…i was pleasantly surprised that this lens proved quite sharp even at 300mm.

To prevent double postings, you can refer to this page for some shots i took with this lens
