anyone encounter this problem? I realised i cant manually override the autofocusand take a picture. In the end, got the switch to manual focus. The lens jus re-autofocus whenever i press my shutter down, even when i hold the focus ring.

I think that's normal isn't it?
All my USM lenses also refocuses when i repress the shutter halfway…
I think you ust need to half press, manual focus then full press?

If that's what u say, then I think that's normal too. When I tried manual, it auto focus... I tot it's spoil! Haha

Wait wait…you mean when you turn the switch to MANUAL…it still auto focus?
If so, then it's FAULTY…i thought you mean in AF when your turn the focusing ring and press again it re-focus…that is normal….
If it focuses even in MF mode on the lens, then it's not normal :)

Ok..i went and had a tried...i have to put the AF mode at "Single Shot" then it will work. In the 2 other modes, it will autofocus even when i adjust while semi depress the shutter button.

Hmm.. If that's the case I better try again.. I just bought mine not long ago and I tried the manual focus once when it seems to auto focus, I switch to auto focus.. Or, did I remember wrongly? Hmmmm..

Of course..Ai Servo means it will constantly autofocus, the other means it will auto detect and auto focus constantly…so of course it will still focus when you half press la…
However if you switch to MF, all options should be unavailable..

I've had the lens for quite some time.... pretty good lens and i love it...

But recently when i was shooting with the lens, there was a very loud focusing sound and when i pressed my shutter halfway, the picture thru the viewfinder jumps... (it's like the whole photo moves up and down before stabilizing). Didn't encounter this when the lens was new... is there any problem with the lens? I just serviced my 450D body at CSC...

based on what you guys replied here..
this lens seems worth it..

Not sure but sounds to me like problem with the VC.

It is a mark improvement over the 55-250mm if you ask me. No regrets getting the lens.

how about if compare with canon 70-300mm IS USM?

another question, the zooming direction of tamron lens is in the opposite direction with canon lens right?

If you're talking about the L, ou cannot compare this with the L lens…the piece on it's own isn't a fair comparison..if you can afford the L, you shouldn't even be looking at this lens…If i could afford, i'd buy all my lens in the L variant…
If you're talking about the NON-L, then google around…the reviews of this is much better than the non-L version.
And yes, the zoom is in the opposite direction…

of course im not talking abt L lens.. (i dint type in thought.)
ok.. hehe.. thx for ur reply~ :)

Honestly, i never owned the 55-250 or the 70-300 IS USM but based on reviews, they say this is better.
However, i only find this an "OK" lens..nothing fantastic. In fact, attach a TC to it and it's horribly soft…even on it's own, i don't find it fantastic so i can't imagine how horrible the 55-250 must be if this supposedly is so much better..
In fact, this lens isn't that much better than my Tammy 18-270 which is supposed to be in a different class but the IQ to me is similar…makes me wonder why i even need this lens :)
Hehe, i've only used this so rarely i'm actually thinking of swapping it with a Sigma 50-500 one day…..

I had used the 55-250 before, and the tammy 70-300 is definitely better.

Stop down to f8 and it is good for doing telephoto landscape.

But if u want to try using it for birding or even the upcoming F1.... Prepared to be disappointed.

My personal experience is that the the 18-270 pzd is terrible and not comparable to the 70-300mm..the older version of 18-270 seems optically better..

Anyway whether how "ok" also depends on what u compare it to and what is your acceptable level. I do not have any L lens so perhaps that's why I find it pretty good..LOL

Has anyone tried any kind of TC on this lens?
I tried a 1.4x on on this and did a test and i found that shooting at 300mm and cropping the image 1.4x gives better IQ than shooting at 300mm with the 1.4xTC….might as well just crop right?

hi, does any one know the sony mount available in sg ??

Not sure but sounds to me like problem with the VC.

thanks for in the input... seems like i should juz bring the lens down to tamron service centre... :dunno:

I have recently used the tammy 70-300 to take pics of common seals @ the isle of Skye Scotland. I took a small boat out to the bay area of Dunvegan where seals were resting on rocks just outside the bay. The water was choppy and it did not help that I was in a small boat. During good light, I took most of the pics with 2 stops down. But when the grey clouds overcast the sky, I got to give it to the VC, with the conditions that I was in, I was still able to get decent shots with 1/200sec.

Of course, I took more than 300 shots, 1/3 came out sharp, and only less than 20 were well composed. I had my thumb on the AF-ON button button to keep the AI-SERVO and VC running throughout the whole shoot, which almost drained out my battery.

IMHO, this is a good lens that works well above it price, it has it quirks, but used properly, it can produce really good pictures.

Here are some samples of the pics.
