I think mentioned many times in this thread, it's because SG offer 3 years warranty. So it's like 100 per year.

AIyah, if not happy, drive or take bus into JB and buy lor. So simple.

are JB prices lower? or is it KL?

i know generally the JB stores get their stock from KL or s'pore if they don't have a distributor near JB. with the additional transportation charges, it might not b so cheap after all

Wah dude, at this price (approx S$820) you make a lot of CS bros here green with Envy:rolleyes: Good buy:thumbsup: Have you check if local agent will take warranty for your lens?

I guess at the $950 price here & the cheap budget air ticket it may still b worth it to fly there to buy at HK4300 & have a free holiday:sweatsm:

Thanks a lot Chin Heng, i will head down to the shop when i'm there.

I just got mine from Hong Kong. Bought it from the Wing Shing in Mongkok. Stock just came in too and I got the first few copies which were sharp and great. Paid HKD 4300 for it.

Image quality is just as good as the non VC version which I also have.

The only thing I could not get used to initially is that the VC "jumps" when it first starts but that's not a problem. Just not similar to Canon or Nikons. Not an issue after using for a while cos you get great photos!

Initially was gonna get the Canon EFS 17-55 2.8 instead but found this was out, tried it and no regrets!

Get one if you can! :)

Wish the Canon mount would be available to Singapore soon...

HK$4300 is about S$785. You make out whether it makes sense to buy at about S$950 in Singapore for 3 years warranty. Is it better to go to JB and buy at RM$1950 with one year warranty? Got international warranty with receipt.

The local distributor is differentiating himself in the wrong way. How many would pay so much more for another 2 years warranty.

i was heard some rumors about tamron

1.JEL send problems lens back to tamron's distributor in malaysia, cos they are agent in sale
lens, not repair and service lens.

2.tamron's 3 year warranty:
1st year - free service and free part replace
2nd yr - free labor service and you have to pay for the part which is spoiled n functionless.
3rd yr - they will tell you it;s time to change a new lens, your lens might not be working
properly, it;s not worth for you to repair the lens

above mention is a rumors of tamron, not really happend on them;)

Has anyone sent their lens to JEL either for calibration or repair lately? And if so, how long did it take for their lens to come back? Particularly for calibration as this should take only a day.

Uh why not? If one intends to use the lens long term, they would be willing to pay 200 more. It's dividing 200 over 2 years after the first year.

I'll be going to Hong Kong on Friday...

Is it worth it to get this lens or should I just get the one w/o the VC? From what I calculated, the difference is about $200++

I really am in between both... sigh

I think the warranty is more of an issue depending on how you use your lens. Or is it our "kiasu" syndrome that makes us just want the BEST of everything. If you need peace of mind, then go for the 3 year warranty instead but if not, just take the 1 year warranty.

I've been buying lenses and stuff for more than 10 years and I have yet to go for servicing due to a fault or repair even once. That is why I am more than happy to save some extra dollars for just the 1 year warranty. If it needs servicing, then pay la. That's all part and parcel of this hobby or profession.

I don't know why exactly HK sells it cheaper but it benefits us as consumers. Bottom line, it's cheaper. I mean, after buying my new kit setup in HK, what I saved paid for the trip itself! I bought the Canon 7D + BGE-7, Extra Battery, the 17-50 VC Tammy, 70-200L 2.8 IS, Marumi filters for both lenses and think I saved about $2k or slightly less.

All in all, it's still a great place to go when buying the mid to higher end stuff as you will save much more as compared to the lower ranges.

I couldn't have been happier, getting my new gear for less + so many opportunities for shooting after your purchase and enjoying a holiday all at the same time. :)

Hope you guys find better deals there!

Hi Kiddie,

I used the non VC version before this and loved it! It's just that for my style and preference of shooting, I really need the VC to help me take slow shutter speeds handheld. The VC is really effective.

For me, I'd gladly pay the premium for it as I've saved by not buying the EFS 17-55 F2.8 IS.

If you really don't need the VC, then go for the non VC one, you won't regret it. However, do think long term cos should you need VC in future, the you'd have to splurge again on a similar lens you could have got in the first place. The good news is that it keeps it value and you can sell it for a decent price down the road to fund another purchase :) Hahaha...... spending never ends!

Hope this helps in your decision.

Ok, I like low-light shooting so I think I'll get this lens...and save some moolah buying it in HK! :)

Hm... wad are the tell tale signs to see if i have a good copy of the of the tamron 17-50mm lens since some are faulty. I test the sharpness when aperture at f2.8 and when aperture at f22? Are they other things that i got to take note? I m sorry if i make sound dumb asking such a question but i think you guys are more experience than me, thus will be able to offer some advice. I really hope i have a good copy since i will be getting it in Hk, a one to one exchange will be more difficult.

Hi Darenlock,

I am not the most technical on this matter. Few things i'd do is to ensure I use my own body so I can check if there's any compatibility issues. Then i'd check on the focus close up and then a wide angle shot of subject from about 3-5 metres away. Review in your camera screen and see if the focus points are focused or sharp. If not convinced, try another lens since you are there.

I was lucky, all lenses bought had no issues at all.

Thank you once again for your prompt reply, Chin Heng!

Thanks for all the infos,
still waiting for canon mount version...

I just called JEL yesterday, 17-50mm f/2.8 VC (Canon) is not available yet, could be end of the month of early next month according to one marketing guy Daryl.
