Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8 non VC or with VC better ?

Sometimes, such question you may read reviews through hours and unable to decide clearly.

I recommend, if you are not doing any major challenging shots [In short not doing lot of commercial work, or work under special condition like bend down or have to move camera while releasing shutter etc] ,

Pick Non-VC :) I suggest, you will save 200-300 extra and buy one speed light with that saving.

On top of it there are some feedbacks on VC version that its less sharp compared to non-vc etc which I am not sure. I am very happy user of Non-VC.

One question:
I went to Joye [cant remember exactly] Shop @ Funan last week, he offered quote of VC at S$735, although he didn’t had stock, worth checking and if any of you can provide feedback / review about store will help me a lot.

I doubt if 735 is the actual price. GST not included plus you u need to buy the front/rear cap and warranty for a few hundreds. You'll end end up paying more than the recommended price. :nono:
I always go to reputable shops.

Tamron 17-50 VC $735 might be grey copy price, perhaps it is with G, or without G. You used to be able to get the Sigma 30/1.4 and Sigma 50/1.4 for about $530 and $650 respectively from DD Electronics.

this will depend on how you will use it and under what conditions you will be using it.
there are feedback saying that the non-VC has better iq.
However, shooting under low lights conditions, with the extra stops (with VC on) you are getting means you will be getting a sharp photo instead of a blur photo regardless of the iq. Apply to hand holding and when the subject is relatively still.

I find it okay even in low light, no need for VC. Of course you should have some basic camera shooting technique for handheld shots, but I don't have a problem in this area.

Totally agree! Ive got handshake issues due to a nerve problem (mind you, I'm not having some Parkinson Disease!) and have been using my tamron 1750 in lowlight + speedlight. Even w/o speedlight, it is still fantastic!

Me too.

ok guys i just bought the non-vc version 2 days ago, the AF is really loud! haha. i was using canon kit 18-200 usually.

i dont think its normal for it to be so loud right? :dunno:

Ya, got a bad feeling abt this. Got it at NT 10900. Thought it was cheap, tested the IQ and everything else was ok so I bought it.

but ive also seen people using the lens normally even with the loud AF. some say it is normal. :dunno:

its normal. its meant to scream like a wasp's nest because there's no micro motor inside. try canon's 50mm 1.8, its another noisy bugger. all normal.

wah really meh? i got a friend also using the same lens i dont remember it being so noisy leh.

You guys must have really sensitive ears. :bsmilie:

just bought my tamron 17-50 non-vc today. af is really really loud. louder than my 18-55 kit lens. but man....its real sharp i wouldnt mind trading slow/noisy focus for the image quality. af speed is acceptable. though not fast, its not exactly slow either, probably faster than the kit due to its big aperture. :)

imho, i dont think vc is that much of a need when comes the 17-50mm. basic camera holding technique and also the weight of your camera does comes in handy... Vote for the non VC one :)

mmmm after using it for one night, i think its really up to what you shoot. i found myself doing quite a few 0.4 sec exposures handheld and the lack of vc somewhat disappointed me. but im sure the sharpness during daytime wont let me down! but yeah it really depends on how you gonna use the lens and etc. :D

I have this lens, I find it haunting in lowlight
