I do believe it's purely psychological when one compares a China-made and Japan-made product from the same manufacturer, particularly if it's the same lens, made with the same tolerances.

there has been anecdotal evidence that made in japan have a better QC rate than the china assembled ones...though i've got a china one and it's sharp as a needle with no ttl-bl problems at all! :D

At the end of the day, better bring laptop to test the lens. using the lcd at the back isn't very ideal...

Agree. It's better not to have any bias to country of manufacture in general. For this lens, since both the MIJ and MIC ones do have QC issues, just test yours carefully.

ok thanks... any tips on checking the lens?

Shoot at f/2.8. Check for center sharpness. Also, place three AA batteries in a row, approximately 2cm apart from each other. From about 45º off the line of the batteries (i.e. the batteries are not perpendicular to your image plane, but at an angle of 45º to your image plane), focus with your center focus point on the center battery and check for front/back focus. If the center battery is reasonably sharp, there should be little or no back/front focusing.

Shoot at f/4 and f/5.6. Check for alignment issues. By f/4 or f/5.6, decent corner sharpness should be attained. Shoot with subjects placed approx on the 1/3 and 2/3 marks, both portrait and landscape, and check that they are reasonably sharp. If one particular side is showing softness, it is probably due to misaligned elements.

By f/8 the image should be sharp across the frame. Check for alignment issues at f/8 again.

Otherwise, simple things like scratches and outer body appearance are minor things to look out for. Please don't be anal about dust inside the lens. A few specs is perfectly normal - no lens is dust free out of the factory.

Very comprehensive indeed.

really? they quoted me 620 for the older version of the lens (nikon mount), not the newer one with built in lens motor (that can AF on the D60) that was just launched. the rest of the camera shops in sg seem to be completely out of stock of this lens.

ok just bought the old tammy nyp 17-50 2.8 A16E canon mount from tcw for 590. grey with one year warranty.

the guy at tcw told me that even though the warranty card is in japanese (wth!!), can send to tithes marketing (tamron SG distributor) for warranty within 1 year.

also, CP penin quote 710, john 316 quote 690, alan quote 650. all original set, not grey.

Hmm...Just got the new 17-50 II version in HK, Man Shing no stock (canon going for HK2780, Nikon no stock). So had to get from Cam^2 (same Sai Yueng Choi St as Man Shing, just further down towards Mongkok direcition), HK2900 for Nikon mount. I was thinking why the lens so weird one, AF no sound. Did not know that this is the new lens.

I had spare HKD, so gotta spend it off instead of bringing back to convert back to SGD and waste more $$. ;p

HKD 2780 is about 500 bucks.
