I bought mine at around $680 from MS(nikon mount). Should be +/- depends on where you get it...

$688 (minolta mount) from mscolor. dunno if it's diff price for diff mounts.

i wan a 17-40's slient and better build but require a longer zoom range... not oftenly shooting in low light... but no budget... can only choose either 17-40 or 17-50...
wat a troublesome guy am i...

if u want 2.8 and want L and NO BUDGET
get 16-35Lamd 24-70L la

I had ploughed thru all these long threads about this lens before getting one myself. Thought of posting this to assure others about a few things:

(a) QC problems may be exagerated -- I tried a few at the shop, all OK - tack sharp. Maybe the manufacturing process has been tightened up after all the bad publicity. Lens certainly feels more solid than the 18-70mm kit lens.

(b) Focusing -- fast enough for me, no worse than, say the Nikon 50mm f1.4 D lens, perhaps even faster. Also, not any more noisy than the D lenses. (Of course, not as quiet as the AF-S series).

(c) Focusing accuracy -- no problem on a D70.

(d) Vignetting is visible at f2.8 across all focal lengths.

(e) 17mm is wonderful -- although just 1mm less than the 18-70mm kit lens, the angle of view is so much wider.

(f) Chromatic aberration -- a bit more pronounced than the kit lens, but not enough to derail all its other good characteristics. Those who can't stand this will have to get the expensive Nikkor glass.

(g) Image quality is good -- images are sharp corner to corner even at f2.8, although stopping down to f4 or 5.6 provides significant improvements. Most importantly, the lens is usable at f2.8 -- a bit soft, but very usable. I guess, this must be one big reason for its popularity, in addition to its sharpness.

Nice review, Viewpoint. Thank you!

I have been eyeing this lens for some time. But I am holding on to see the performance of the Tokina 16-50 before buying.

I don't know about 'more solid than 18-70'. I feel the 18-70 may be more solid yet.

Agree the Nikon 18-70mm is a wonderful lens in its own right -- very sharp across the entire image. But after using the Tammy, I would say it has a number of clear advantages over the kit lens:

(a) Less barrel distortion at max wide angle
(b) f2.8
(c) Sharpness equal to, or better
(d) 17mm on Tamron is a lot wider

Overall, these advantages may not seem a lot -- and for some, may not justify changing to the Tamron. The kit lens has several advantages too such as 70mm, silent focusing and AF-S mechanism (switching from auto to manual focusing is so easy).

But I find the Tammy simply a joy to use. My 2 cents.

I have to say the Tamron is an amazing piece of glass (and plastic and rubber), but I would never shoot with it wide open unless I had to. I'd shoot at f/4. Furthermore, the 18-70 has SWM which is really fast and silent, compared to the buzzy, but still relatively speedy micromotor.

The 18-70's SWM/AF-S is not that totally fast..true its silent from my previous usage, but it's AF-S seems crippled compared to the other AF-S High End Lenses...

Anyone knows anywhere got stock for this lens ?

If you know, pm me... :bsmilie:

What mount? Nikon mount available at John 3:16. Haven't seen any other mounts anywhere for that matter.

Canon mount ... ;)

Elusive, everywhere. Once it's out, it gets snapped up like nobody's business. Call up a shop that you frequent and see if they can reserve a set for you. John 3:16 is able to do that for you.
