Tamron 15-30mm VC vs Nikon 14-24mm AF-S ( NIKON )

For some reason, many pple seem to have the thinking that Sigma 12-24 is a DX lens...

Yes. Sigma 12-24 is a full-frame lens. (Link here: http://www.sigmaphoto.com/product/12-24mm-f45-56-dg-hsm-ii) And yes, if you think 14mm on the Nikon 14-24 is wide, 12mm is much wider(looking through the Sigma 12-24 lens, 17mm seems 'normal'). Although recently beaten by Canon's 11-24mm f4 at 11mm FF, but still costs only 1/3 (or less) the compared to Canon. But then being wider than Nikon's by 2mm and Tamron's by 3mm, I tend to get a lot more empty space in my composition, so it challenges me to frame my shots in a way that I use up all the empty spaces as much as possible. :)

If you are struggling to "fill up empty spaces", you don't need that wide.

Not really 'struggling', but more like I want the perspective that 12mm gives me to add some effect to the composition. Kind of intended barrel distortion. If i dun wan to go that wide, i can choose to shoot at 14-18mm range, which is the best performing focal range for this lens, and 14-18mm is the widest focal length for quite a lot of other wide angle lenses. More like this lens gives me utility to shoot 12mm wide and 16mm 'normal' in cases where a lens like the 16-35 doesnt allow me to go wider without recomposing my shot.

Having said that, every lens is unique for varying purposes. I cant say that my Sigma 12-24 lens is better than the Nikon 14-24 or Tamron 15-30 just because it is wider. For the utility and convenience of its wider focal length, i trade off focusing speed and max aperture. It is much easier to use the Nikon and Tamron lenses to shoot astrophotography than my Sigma lens purely because it is f2.8 vs f4.5. So every lens is good in its own way.

How does one struggles? Roll on the floor to fill up the empty space?

Many times its the restriction on the location, or things are simply are, that you can't change, or have limited ability to.

Different focal length, different situations. Good to have choices.

I'll wait for Sigma's ART version.... yep. ;) ;)
