you want to use f1.4 to f2.8 to shoot table shot? got shadow boh?? (in hockkian)
if you are shooting with full frame, on a 24mm lens, f5.6 may not giving enough depth of field. don't be naive, you think very easy to arrange people for table shot? that takes many years of experience and know how to sweet talk people.
the ballroom very bright izit? don't be hero, just use flash, else off white balance, corners not sharp, motion blur, don't tell me you want to photoshop every table shots photos? and not everything can be photoshopped FYI!
btw, is this another case of "my friend ask me to help, this is my first time shoot wedding" thingy?
1k for the kit lens and 1388 for the Tamron 24-70 lol... I'll go for the Tamron anytime haha.
One of the concerns I have on zoom is the f2.8 aperture... that's a lost of 2 full stops of "ambiance" light Of cos, one can argue that you dont shoot group shots at f1.4 but I personally do shoot group shots at f1.8 every now and then due to poor lighting conditions lol. Had to rearrange the people in a slight semi circle though so all will be in focus...
Thank you all for your input!!! Really appreciated it
I think some of you folks misunderstood me, I am definitely using a flash. What I am referring to is the ambiance or background light. As Ah Pao had mentioned, taking a shot with the subjects properly exposed but with a completely black background is very ugly and amateurish looking. I usually barely properly expose the background with 1/30, f2.8 and ISO3200. Was hoping to bump up the shutter a little.
To do that, I either have to bump ISO to 6400 or 12800 or lower the aperture. Like catchlights had mentioned, table shots are afterall printed in 4R. Probably no one except fellow photographers will notice the difference between the softness of f1.4 and the no-so-soft f2.8 in a 4R photo. Hence, I'm not very certain if it's really needed to shoot at f5.6 and above for a 4R in times like these when amount of available light is so crucial.
No working pro is going to spend time correcting these problems in post production. Simply get it right there and then. f/5.6 or f/8 at ISO1600, strong vibrant colors and definition, consistency everytime and leaves nothing to chance. What is so difficult?
Imagine those mega-weddings with 80 tables upwards.... Table shots also correct each one. Can faint. :bsmilie:
Another small tip is to test your flash exposure when they are almost settled down. Don't fumble with the settings while they are already ready.

before the MC go up the stage making speech, you can do test shots of the cake, the aisle, the VIP tables.can also.
but to be more professional, personally I dont usually fire off unnecessarily. Most of the testings are done way before and also based on experience with lightings.
