Hi Dennis,
I hope this helps:
1. Outdoor lighting from 12pm to 3pm
Assuming the sunlight remains consistent in intensity, the cam setter's task will be rather straightforward. If cloud cover fluctuates, then the cam setter will have to inform all photographers to change their settings due to use of manual mode. This probably means mass-messaging all via sms unless there is another broadcast means.
2. Type of Comms system
The walkie-talkie comms system is the best approach for this undertaking. The 10-minute intervals may result in cam setter becoming a road-runner up and down the avenue of tripods if there are problems or comms breakdown. Would 15 minutes interval be better? it is advisable to conduct a trial(with less participants) to iron out problems. At least 5 walkie-talkies would be needed for such an undertaking.
3. Purpose/Impact of panorama
The 50mm focal length made me think about Jed's remark about 'missing the best bits'. What do we want to say with the panorama? Is it about:
- A festivity?
- People & Place? In particular, street life or Buildings?
The ambience of the shot is important. If taken in the early afternoon, would the panorama be 'washed out' or too harsh? Would it be better to shoot from 5pm to 8pm when the full spectrum of colours will be captured day -> evening -> night?
Orchard Road at that time is magical as the sun sets. In my mind, I see the panaromas of Orchard Road at different times: late afternoon, just before sunset where the long shadows and hues saturate, just after sunset where dusk rules, and fully after dusk when the night lights appear along the road.
It'd be easier and more realistic to have a 3-hr duration shoot rather than 9-hr shoot
4. Film & Processing
I suppose most forummers purchase their slide film at either Peninsula Plaza or Shopping Centre. Anyone with good recommendations?
As for processing, RGB at Beach Road is reliable; they can take care of slide scanning and processing. However, their fees are rather high, IMO. Still, I can talk to the shop manager, Helen. Either that, or you can contact her directly
She might offer a lower price for such an event.
5. Press Coverage
Straits Times Picture Desk is interested in covering this event on the actual day. Do you need the contact, Dennis?
Sam.
