Hi Uncle Ghaz1,
this is my sunrise shot. Was very cloudy and was about to rain. But managed to catch a shot before me and my camera got soaked :)

Good idea to convert it to B&W and i admire your dedication to take photos under extreme conditions. Putting the sun off centre is a good compositional choice for me and of course, i love the intense sky, looks like the clouds were being sucked into the sun in a whirlwind. I think i also captured some images like that today, except i was luckier coz it didn't rain, just very windy.

Make sure you dry your camera and lenses well before putting it into the drycabinet.

Actually, i am still going to use the focusing screen la. No point changing. It is only nicked at the top right corner.

My original one is still fine.

Because of the pincer when you tried to place it? So I gather now you're officially on split focus screen?

Thanks eugene. It was a challenging situation the first part of this morning's shoot coz before the sun rose, the wind was blowing very strongly. It blew down my potted plants at home. When i got to the reservoir, even worse, no protection in the open spaces. My tripod also seemed rather flimsy for the job i thought, should have brought the manfrotto instead of the Benro, but i just stabilised the legs and hooked my cam bag to it to further stabilise the whole setup. I was on uneven ground somemore! Luckily it all held up very well, though i was never far from my gear in case it toppled.

It's just a piece of precision plastic (I think, not glass) that is under your mirror prism that is reflecting the images to your view finder. There should be focus squares with fine wires as well (which may or may not be on the focusing screen)... I haven't taken out mine, so may not know so well...

How it ACTUALLY works.... time to google once again...

You can change it yourself if you know where to get replacement part and the proper tool to release the screen. I think DD123 can show you a website (how they change the screens to split focus type)...

It is a piece of "frosted" glass. The original one has no markings on it. Just blank. This one I ordered is actually a real original Nikon focusing screen meant for FM3 camera. They just cut it down to size to fit whichever camera you order it for. It is called the K3 screen.

There are no electrical contacts on it. The focus points are not on the screen itself but another piece of glass. So all your focus points and grid lines still work as per normal.

Yes the tweezers. I did not notice I was grabbing it deeper than just the 'handle'. But ok la. you should see old film cameras, all dusty dirty as hell, but people still use it as per normal. I think we are just paranoid la.

I am. In my old camera D40x, I installed a made-in-china no brand screen. Much darker, and the focus is not really spot on. This one is spot on.

This one is an original Nikon one. Just that it is meant for the FM3, and the company cut it down to size to fit the D300s.

Yes, I am officially on the split focusing screen now. I can focus my MF lenses hella fast now... like the old days with Film camera.

Which leads me to the next question... Shooting with the Voigtlander 58mm f/1.4 already? :bsmilie:

Well, better than us...D90 users who can't even fully use the 50 /1.2 primes...

Well 20 or 24 should be good. Covers what you don't already have... both manual?

Both autofocus.. now wrecking brain to see which one better... 24 or 20.

Bro....both f/2.8 Nikkor or not Nikkor? I don't seem to recall Nikkor having both lengths at f/1.8 leh... :dunno:

Of all the shots, uncle like number 2 the best! My preference only, okay? :D Number 3 okay, but personally felt the reflections on the water got cut off too much. And top of the sky a bit empty, hence No 2 wins in my book.
