Very nice focus pointS...point. Very "artistic":bsmilie:

oh 50 Cron IV is a very sharp lens. I have 1 chrome piece in my dry box which seldom see the light. Maybe it should soon. I like it due to the focusing tab. the latest version is without the tab but with an inbuilt hood. Im sensing a revamp of this lens with asph elements and inbuilt hood with focusing tab soon...

this is as sharp as you can get from leica untill you try the lux 50 asph. hehe

Thanks to all bros who shared their knowledge. Cheers.

CO Sir, I thot the tab one is the type 3?

A Japanese book on Leica lenses (published by tastylife in 2007) says that the tab type is type 3.

However, the Leica Pocketbook 7th edition (published by Hove in 2002), says that there are 2types of Type IV, one with tab, one with built in hood (but without tab). The built in hood (without tab type) started production in 1994.

Not sure if I got it right, but that's what the printed material say.

Hi Doc, type III is the version with the same look as summilux type2 (all black newer built version) and uses old lens type. Type IV is the first cron to use modern glass and starts production from 1979 (the year Im born). Only 1 type of cron has tab, which is the version 4.

so run-down of cron 50mm:

1. Chrome collapsible (improved summitar)
2. Rigid with/without goggles. (improved contrast at the expense of micro-contrast). Leica's mechanical engineering at its peaks. Its barrel is the most complex of all leica lenses ever.
3. Black only version (think summilux type 2 all black with E39 filter) - introduction of new flint glass type. Contrast is high but outer zone is soft.
4. black and chrome version. focusing tab, no hood. Uses modern glass and knew lens design.
5. current version with in-built hood. no focusing tab but with in-built hood. lens design remains unchanged. Therefore some call it "type 3"

ya loh.. as all the books that I read.. makes sense to lump everything together the Thorium and LaK9 glass. else so confusing to the already confusing Leica history :S

but cron 4 is the best till this date I find! Just love the focusing tab alot~!

Japanese book differentiate the Collapsible Summicron from Rigid Summicron classify the first rigid as type I, whereas in Leica Pocket Book, Collapsible Summicron is classified as type I, hence the confusion.

Nice shot with this lens...as handsome as his dad...:)

The 2nd one is hexanon???

I own the hexanon before. Very nice and sharp and what i find is only the colors. slightly different ..
hookonclassic - thanks :embrass:

nordleadx - as mentioned, you can't go wrong with any of the 3, this happened to be the zeiss planar.
