Still Using a Film SLR?

I am still using my Minolta 700si SLR despite the availability of KM 5D and 7D. The reason I am not upgrading to a DSLR is because of the lens factor. I like my 24mm lens to remain 24mm and not 36mm.

Are there anyone like me still holding back on buying a DSLR because of this reason?

I still use film though not for the same reasons.
I have a digital camera but it's the digicam that spends more time in the dry box than my D5. I have asked myself a lot of times why I have not bought the D5D.

For me (and this is just me) after a couple of times using digital, getting instant feedback takes the fun out of photography. When I'm finished with a roll my anticipation levels are very high. Waiting for a roll to come back from the lab is like a father waiting for the birth of a child.

IMHO, DLSR is for the serious enthusiast who require the best results all the time. Hence shoot, shoot, shoot until one gets the right shot. I don't need to have all my shots as perfect as can be. Maybe because my favorite areas are street photography, available light portraiture and photojournalism. The flaws add to the human dimension.

I like prints a lot. I like holding them, framing them, enlarging them. Digital has made me lazy to make prints. I get good shots on my digital but most of those shots are either sitting in my PC or still in the SD card.

But I have not shunned digital technology. I do use PS on my scanned negatives. Levels, USM, cropping, b&w conversion.

For me, when I REALLY do "serious" photography, I take out my film camera.

Are there anyone like me still holding back on buying a DSLR because of this reason? If the 9D DSLR does not come with a Full frame 35 mm size sensor, I think KM can leave the DSLR market altogether and I will offload my Minolta stuff in B&S and have a hard time deciding on Sony, Canon or Nikon. But if KM does come out with a full frame 35 mm size sensor, I bet B&S will be flooded with 5/7Ds.

Anyway, my interim digitalcam is the 7.1 MP Canon A620. This is my second buy after the Canon G1 years ago. The A620 is impressive and has all the functions of a DSLR and more.
 With the features I see the A620, I woner if a full frame DSLR with all its weight, lenses, filters and flash is worth the while. My 700si sits in the humidity cabinet cracking, peeling and  calling out for a breath of fresh air.

I am still using film with my Eos5, Eos50and Eos1000FN thought I own the Eos20D and Nikon coolpix8700. There is a different feel when I uses a film camera. Kind of nostalgic I guess. Will still shoot film as long as film are available and not at a exorbitant specialist price in the future. Guess what, I admire those who still pick up their OM4, FM2, AE1... to shoot when I see them on the street. Can't help but to walk over to them n have a chat.

What are the KM lenses you have?
Let me know when you decided to off load EVERYTHING ;)

I also like you shoot, shoot, shoot until one gets rite. But go home see almost every piece is right. So now I use a videocam....dun need to see which is rite n no need to shoot, shoot, shoot.

Overall, I still use my Mickey Mouse Camera and One Room Flat negative....

Noooooooooooo............................!!!!!

Much prefer the tactile sensuality of Ebony and the masculine hardness of Titanium.

Yin & Yang bonded in perfect harmony.

But sometimes Cherry and Mahogany will also do.

was wondering, is x700 or x570 better, i am thinking of one?

x700 for me anytime
but if i nv rmb wrong, the viewfinder of the x570 provides information of the shutter speed u r currently at.
this info is not available in the x700 viewfinder, only the metering is available..

i just got a x370. hehe. will let u know of hw it feels, then u can have a wider choice. =)

Now i'm back using my D5 and my 700si since my A1 is in the shops. Honestly the sound of the motor forwarding the film is very STIMULATING for the creative aspect of it. But after so long using my DIGICAM, i really have to start to remember that films has its end and beginning. other than that, it's been really fun using film again.

Hehe using Dynax 5 along with the 7D. Interestingly the 18-70DT works nicely at 24mm for the Dynax 5.

QX

I've sold off my Dynax 7 so I'm left without a film SLR.. though I still have a TLR and a MF rangefinder :)

what overcrash said should be right, the info in the finder is better for the x570, being able to see the shutter speed is great. iirc, x570 loses the P mode, compared to X700.

Every shoot count 100% when you use film camera. Not every guys here will try. Especialy when you too rely on digital too much after toooooo Long! Like what you said. When i take out my 700si, i'll make sure my customers don't know how to choose the picture, just because all are too good until they can't reject any of it!:bsmilie:

yes i am stil using film SLR cos it is a camera won lied to you.....!! DSLR is convi but certain time i find that a lots of photog use software to tweak it....makes the photo looks so fake...so how to improve skill?:thumbsd:

Glad to know that there are still many conventional film users out there just like me! :bsmilie:

I'm a sentimental person, and I guess using film does hold that added sentimental value for me. Been using film for the past 10 years, and I just couldn't bear the idea of dumping it for something new.

To me (no offence to DSLR users), digital is the "in" trend now for the added convenience and versatility to play around with special effects and image corrections.

I like my photos as they are, in their original state, and I think I probably have decent enough skills to not resorting to image corrections all the time. :P I'm someone who enjoys challenges and shooting on film fulfills this desire of mine, because everything eventually boils down to the understanding of your own camera, exposure, lighting etc, without having to view the LCD, delete and reshoot. The adrenalin and excitement builds up as you send your films in for developing and finally seeing the fruit of your labour.

Also, I'm a B & W enthusiast. IMO, digital probably can't match up to the quality and grainy effect I can achieve with B & W films.

Well again, I might consider getting a DSLR in the next year or so for my wedding assignments. Most couples prefer digital to film nowadays and I've actually lost quite a fair bit of deals bcos of this reason. :(

Hi,
Just wanna share a piece of news I recently discovered. Fotohub has lowered its price of slide film to that comparable or lower than that of Cathay. Throw that in with their package price which includes processing fees paid up front when you buy the slides, it makes slide film even more cost effective.

For eg, Provia 100 costs $8.90 now. With the processing and film, the package price is $11.90. Can't remember figures for other slide film cos I'm a provia user anyway.

Hope this is good news for slide users. ;)
