I find your works like complexity in simplicity. Which to me seems extremely difficult. Russel once mentioned to be. The way to improve is to shoot and shoot, read, talk to people, travel. But there is still one question left answered. Why is it that when i compare my photo to the exact same photo shot by someone else, mine looks so much worse? in which your photos here applies to the way i feel. Its like... your shots are masterful, and to "replicate" it seems so hard. Care to Share?

Exceptional simplicity. But yet so complex.

sorry to take so long to reply to you, Chris Lim..

im not exactly very sure whose pictures you are referring to, AZhou's or mine...but i'll just give my 2 cents on the issue anyway..:embrass:

when you say "when i compare my photo to the exact same photo shot by someone else, mine looks so much worse?", i'm sure you don't mean 'exactly' the same right? but rather, the way someone approach the same object/topic is different from yours right?

there's some element of truth when you quoted "The way to improve is to shoot and shoot, read, talk to people, travel."

the more you see, experience...you will start to 'develop' your own photographic sense. for some, it will come fast (like in AZhou's), some takes time and some take forever (like me).
what i mean by photographic sense..

Pre-developed photographic sense - photographer sees sponge,he photograph sponge as it is.

Highly-developed photographic sense - photographer sees sponge,he turn it into this

Never-developed photographic sense sees it as this

:bsmilie: am i making sense?

interesting theme. i can feel the obsession on two fronts, firstly an obsession with capturing the model in a photograph, secondly with possessing the photographic image. notice the "fingerprints" in the image, as if the viewer has the compulsive need to hold the photo and gaze into her eyes every day.

wow, zaren actually go further than me myself :embrass:

Actually I purposely dont reply this since I thot you talking about stereobox. But anyway, regardless talking about who, I just give my 1 yen reply =p

When we talking about simplicity, there are few degree of simplicity. I found out that in certain degree simplicity turns out to bring out the maximum impact. Perhaps... Less is More? Maybe that's why in simplicity photograph people tend to 'discover more'
In another case, maximalism does exist. Everythings pushed to the further possibility. This method work as well.
Conclusion is, every approach definately can work.

One interesting comparison would be in model photoshoot or event shoot. Take same model, sometimes even same angle, same pose, same lighting, but some turns out so  I think that's what interesting about photography.
Photography is about personality. All of us have different handwritting - so do our photography. So at the end of the day, as stereobox put, it's more or less discover your signature ( or sense in stereobox word ) and bring out the best from there.

I do, myself, admire few photographers. In 'all-time-master' I can recall Bill Brandt and Man Ray ( so coicidentally later on i found that Bill Brandt apprentice on Man Ray once ) in our "Clubsnap Master" I do admire student and mattlock.
I admit I did try to "replicate" their work before - and the result is just damn :dunno:
I learn my lesson alrerady - copying stuff is not that easy. Instead I'm using these masters as my inspiration to develop my own images.

I thot someone mention that the sponge is cliche

Anyway, stereobox, I really sincere when I said that you are the first one who inspire me to go into photography. I just find it strange when I feel that you are somehow in front of me ( in term of passion, technical skill, determination, etc. It just so straight forward you already do it for few years - as main occupation - everyday, while I just starting like 2-3 months - as hobby - in free time if nothing better to do ) Just a bit weird because I dont think I deserve your compliment at all - and you deserve more place than what you think you are.

UPZ for my pix again! XD

And yeah loh, need to be honest to you all.

"Confession of an Angel Zhou"
For those who have been following this probably-the-most-OT-thread-in-this-project, I believe you should be quite familiar with my "Olympus Accident" last time. So yes, got no camera to shoot and I dont think you guys interested in my nokia snapshot of myself or my neoprint pix - therefore now I shoot around once every two week in my friend's studio and post it one every two days. I know I cheat lah but hope you dont mind.

If any of you do mind - have any objection, GOOD, buy me a camera!
Nikon D70S prefered =p but I wont reject others too =3

kaoz... this is the most mushy thread i ever read...

so full of emotions & XXX stuffs.. ;p

a bit of correction here if i may ....

i didn't exactly mean it as 'discover'. somehow, i associate the word 'discover' as something already fixed there,exists...maybe hidden.

i would prefer the word 'develop' which i used. after all, cliche as this might sounds, we 'learn' more and more as we go along (dont confuse with 'pace' of learning). example, our 'style' might change along the way, sometimes drastically. and what we used to like, we hate at the present. what we used to hate in the past, we gain new insight, etc.

developing 'photographic sense' to me is like a baby learning new words. the more we experience, the more we learn, the more words we can use to express ourselves, and ultimately, hopefully, develop a 'personality' - most importantly, ... your own personal sense of aesthetics. or even learn a totally new language. of course, a baby can also learn foul language :bsmilie:

in that case, we can treat stuff like, for example, Clubsnap, as our playschool/kindergarten/primary school/university :P

 keep it up honey. i like your attitude :)

adding my own 2 cents again:
some say copy is the best form of compliment. but when one copies a 'work of master'... what are we really copying? the visual style? technique? but can we truly copy the master's development the way he/she did?

but 'copying' can be like , (pardon my baby analogy again) .. a baby learning after his/her parents. so no real shame in that either, as long its taken in the right spirit.
