"to focus on one thing, is to master it"

first savour the full cup of tea, understand and appreciate all the finer points and nuances of that cup of tea, then it will make the appreciation of all other teas that much simpler. a mind which knows one thing well admits no distraction, while the empty mind may only scratch the surface of understanding of many things.

:)

I dont really understand - but I like!

ahh!! provoking questions raised

hmmz..i have made it known in post #821 that "my interpretation of the theme 'simplicity' is not merely to take photographs of 'simple' topics, objects or even taking photographs 'simply' "

once i am able to 'excuse' myself from the above, i am 'free' to explore the theme as i wish.
True, true - it is very hard to distinguish between the 'nitty-gritty part' of executing the shot, and seeing the picture for what it is, the essence of which is 'a 15 seconds exposure of an elevator ride'. (my a80 only goes up to 15secs :embrass: )

agreed: the 'look' of the image IS complex, and the post-processing only adds further to the complexity.

as explained in post #844, it is to illustrate the point that we are easily distracted by 'external influences'. in the end, did we fail to see the essence of the picture? which is, again, "a 15 seconds exposure of an elevator ride".

after re-reading my own post, perhaps i have confused the viewer by substituting the word 'essence' with 'execution' :embrass:

I think the issue is quite simple. Stereobox went too deeply with his own thinking of this photograph essense while the viewers ( me at least ) already have a certain reaction in our mind about this picture - that's contradictive to the theme.

As zeng3feng said, the first reaction - the one without any interfare, I believe most people will agreed that this photograph somehow more toward complexity than simplicity. Regardless the photographer's point of view - that's what I see. Complexity in colour and line. Far far away from the original theme.

When the photographer explain his work, I assume he invite the viewer to see from his point of view - what he want to show in this photograph. When the viewers already have some basic idea in their mind, it's very difficult to just throw it away and try to see it the way the photographer see it ( here, the tea cup analogy )

At the end of the day, it's back to what one try to percieve.

In a negative tone, as a form of communication - this image DOES NOT WORK AT ALL. The communication fail, the audience cannot get the message through. The noise has take over upon what the image maker trying to say.

In a positive tone, as a form of self indulgence, I believe more or less stereobox heading to the direction he's planning to achieve.

Alot of times, it's either the theory is ahead of the work, or the work is ahead of the theory...

so in this case, there's a gap inbetween theory & the photo... and when the explaination comes in.. it was unable to fill in the gap.. so the message didnt manage to get across successfully to the viewer... hmmmm... what the hell m i toking anyway :bsmilie:

exactly my sentiment!

HOwever I give my  for stereobox as he brave enough to explore beyond what's already common. A lot of refreshing and inspiring works from him lately.
( back to the day that... *cough cough* <-- bad Angel )

It's somehow like the tragedy of form and function.
Function follow form - or form follow function?
And what to fill in the gap inbetween is another case.
