I find that the brightness is fine and it doesn't darken the silhouette too much, which goes well with the colours of the horizon. For the intended message, i think this works for me. Personally i think a slight increase in contrast would be ideal, only very slight increase would do
To add on, for photographs with many elements (there are many here: the stream leading to the sea, the glowing piece of wet sand, the couple, the sun, the plane, the texture), it would be useful to deliberately guide the eye. An overall brightness in the scene would basically not aid in this aspect, whereas a darkened version would definitely emphasize the relatively brighter (and darker) aspects here, e.g. the sun, the silhouettes, the plane. These 3 are more integral to the "storyline", I feel.. The rest are nice, but too many cooks spoil the broth. Plus a darkened version would also multiply the effect of the light vignetting, which will aid in drawing the eye to the centerstage of the photograph here.

Anyways, just my thoughts. Sometimes it boils down to personal preference. It may or may not work better.
