SSC Sports Photography Workshop (Session 1: Russell Boyce)

True about the focal length, for football, 90 % of the time its the action betw the legs and the ball, you need to include the heads otherwise it would not work, so anything above 300mm is going to limit you to actions at least half the field away, for crop body especially.

They have only 1 400mm and 500mm on loan so its a first come first serve basis, probably the 400mm was already out when you requested for it. The 70-200 would have been just nice on a DX body, I was using a 300mm on a FX, and that limit me towards the corner to get the action at the goal mouth framed in.

I believe our team was the first to leave the room and the last to return... :bsmilie: And needless to say, first at the NSC table to pick up our heavy weight lens... Even if the 400mm was pre-reserved, the next best choice should either be a 200-400 or 300 VRII. We weren't picky, so when handed the 500mm... our response was "oh, okay!..." Took it and just left, totally no resilience... :bsmilie:

Nevermind, I've always wondered about 500mm and my wish to try it came true...

Well it was a learning opportunity for all, glad you got the chance to try the big gun....perhaps 200-400 would be just nice for football, but on FX rather than DX. Anyway, there will be 2 more workshops to come for those who did not get or could not go for the first workshop....hope to have them sharing their experiences on this thread.

Apparently the workshop places were filled up within the first day, and 10 places were added to each workshop to cater for the overwhelming reponse.....so you need to be quick to sign on if you want to book your place in the workshop.

With such positive responses, I am sure SSC would continue to plan more such events in the future.

I'm sticking to 70-200 for football match from now onwards... Crop to get the exact framing, just like what Russell suggested.

500mm would be purrrrfect for other long range sports (even on DX) - too bad I haven't gotten used it's handling and settings (oh well).

Were you there to help out yesterday as well? Hope so, that SSC would plan more of such events...

...the next workshop should be this week 19th and following week 26th.

There are also lots of school actions on-going, only problem is these are scheduled on weekdays...with such enthusiasm at the workshop which 40 attended on saturday, and 2 more workshops for another 80, I am sure these will not be the last workshops.....SSC should organize more such events....

Hey danntbt, the good folks at singapore sports council have noted your suggestion, this is after all our first time organizing such events as they are not our usual sports events. :bsmilie:

Look forward to seeing you folks Sooon!

Miss this. I am wondering if we can just take our camera, tripod and lens to S-League match and take photos? If so, can we be beside the pitch? If not, where is a good place to take the actions? I have been wanting to try out sports photography. Am planning to use D700, 70-200, TC-20iii.

You need proper accreditation.

I like this shot the most voux. Were you kneeling, sitting on the pitch or on a chair to get these nice low angles? ;)

....another workshop coming up this weekend for those who signed up...plus International actions coming up in the coming months. such as FINA swimmimng meet and World Netball Championship.......

.....been away in Adelaide for the last few days, am at the airport waiting to board the plane back to Singapore, too bad the Adelaide V8 racecar meet only starts as I am about to leave.

accreditation meaning?

Meaning you need media passes to access the field of play. When we mention field of play, it also refers to the photo positions next to the field of play. In soccer this is typically at the corner flag, but depending on the stadium regulations.

How you get these media passes is usually if you are shooting for papers or International wire agencies – Bernama, Reuters, Associated Press, AFP, Kyodo News, DPA, ANSA, EFE, JIJI etc. Or you shoot for S-League or any of the football clubs as official photographer.

Different stadiums have different restrictions. At Jalan Besar Stadium, they restrict to the corner flag area on the side of the goal-lines.

OMG, she is beautiful, I should have attended the workshop and start taking up sports photography. hahaha
BTW you need a faster shutter speed. Her fingers have motion blur. What did you learn at the workshop?

I see you attended the workshop again? They accept repeat participant?
Err... if so, no wonder the workshop is full house....

Love this shot. The different emotions shown in the picture.

The lighting seems a little bit flat though. But that's out of your control. 3PM game?

PS. They've all got the same shoes in that picture LOL.
