Split Focusing Screen.. anyone using it?

Been reading this thread on focusing screens: http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/...xpensive-focusing-screen-well-worth-29-a.html there's mention that at lower apertures the top half of the rings tend to 'black out'.

Planning to buy one soon. Looking around ebay http://shop.ebay.com.sg/stores/__W0...nQQ_sopZ2QQ_trksidZp3286Q2em20Q2el1246?_rdc=1 there's quite a few available ranging from SG$38 - SG$45 including delivery. Anyone knows if there are any types to avoid.. also if there is an advantage of using a diagonal 45 degree split screen instead of horizontal?

Oh.. then, that is normal.
45 degrees split is more versatile, coz' u can still use it easily when u shoot in portrait mode.

Just installed the 1 from focusing screen ... and it's incredibly bright and certainly very useful for K-M (even when you are using an autofocus lens!).

The packaging is simply excellent ... WUNDERBAR, and installation's a breeze. Anyone interested should really consider this!

and that is from which ebay seller ?

Yeah.. I'm getting used to it and loving it too... There's a little darkening when using Kit Lens and longer zooms.. But it's not a big issue at all.
The screen is supplied with protective sticker. When the sticker is removed, I notice some marks on the screen. Is it advisable wash it?

Hjbyeo's one should be from focusingscreen.com, not ebay. This one is clean right out of the box.

Epileatheral's one i'm guessing it's not focusingscreen.com, coz he mentioned there's a protective film over the screen. I had another from ebay that came with the protective film too. after peeling it off also got some dirt.
To clean it, run it through plain water, gently brushing with a VERY SOFT n clean brush in a circling motion. For me i used one of those watercolour paintbrush.

Thanks for the tip Noel. Mine's dirty too. There are spots all over the place. :(

But focusing wise, it does lessen the margin of error, even at night. Brightness wise, the difference is not significant. Guess I'll clean the screen and replace it with a piece from focusingscreen.com later on.

Thanks for the tip.. I got it from the MO previously. Well, it's only 30 bucks.. I think it's pretty worth it.

Hi Bernard,

Which version did you get? was it the K20D K3 Focusing Screen? Thanks

The most common one would be the K3 one. It's similar to the Katzeye type.

Finally fixed the screen in.

Mine is massively dusty with spots all over :(

Btw, when inserting the screen, with camera upside down, should the tab face left or right? I inserted it with tab facing right, but focus now is a bit off.

by default, the tab should be on the right if you are viewing straight into the lens mount with the camera upright.

Thanks, man.

Now i shall go weep into my beer, after which I'll take it out, wash it and install it right.. getting the latch off was a real %$£$@! :P

Welcomed. The latch was very light and easily popped off for mine i thot it wouldnt lock securely. The focus screen by right scatches quite easily since it is made of plastic. Do be careful with it.

Focus problem solved after inserting it right way..

But I managed to introduced more dust after washing it.. genius me!

Well, at least focus is spot on now. I delight in consolations.

Thanks, man!

which one exactly? I saw there are 10 types :dunno:

thanks

I choose the K3 wo GRID. But I understand from several more experience guys that it's certainly easier with those 45 degrees one.

I prefer using it with the magnifying cup though.
