Speedlight Nikon D70

I am really wondering why Nikon put such an expensive speedlight with a sub USD1000 camera. Since the flashgun is integral part of photography they should have provided at least the D-TTL option :(.

 Any idea why is it so? ;p

The SB800 can be used for most Nikon in D-TTL mode and is not only for the D70.
D70 uses new electronics and thus would be more compatiable with the new flash but not the older ones. BTW D70 is not the only camera that uses i-TTL. The D2 also uses i-TTL.

And to add on, you come out with a new form of TTL on the D2H, why cripple the next model that you release with backwards D-TTL? This is a demonstration of how Nikon values it's products to make sure it's really up to date and not just to fight for market share, no minor upgrades and stripped down versions.

To go further, the SB-600 was developed for D70 users and for the future lower end users that don't require the SB-800.

yup, SB800 was developed with the top end/pro market in mind. But given the usefulness, many D70 users still opt for it (and also pro-level lenses!) .

The reason for changing to i-TTL is probably to meet the professional needs better (than D-TTL) and hopefully, i-TTL could last a longer time than the older DX flashes. Even though flash is relatively cheap (compared to lenses/bodies), most probably do not want to change a perfectly working flash when they move to a new camera body to retain TTL flash commuications and exposure (which is happening now for the early adoptors of Nikon DSLRs who bought the SB80DX). A good thing is that i-TTL seems to be a big improvement over D-TTL, especially in the area of wireless triggering/creative lighting. There is also TTL for high speed sync flash (in the past it is manual).

Do correct me if I'm wrong. My association with Nikon flash started only two years ago with SB24 (a >10 years flash that worked beautifully) and SB80DX (compact and powerful). Actually, the auto sensors on the Nikon flash are really accurate..... and maybe even more consistent than TTL?

I thought (if I am wrong please correct me), ttl, d-ttl and i-ttl are basically some protocols to communicate the camera with flash and the other way around. In that case providing a backward compatability is not all a problem :).

If I have to choose between SB-800 and Sb-600, i preffer the first one. Do you have any idea how much does it cost?

Backwards compatibility only occurs on the D2H which has both D-TTL and i-TTL, it's how the flash communicates with the camera to obtain the right exposure and flash power to output.

SB-800 is $650. SB-600 is unknown yet.

yup.. street price for SB-800 is abt $650, like wat espn has quoted. And i heard SB-600 will be under $500 when released.. so if u're on budget control.. juz go for SB-600 lor.. which i believe it's oredi powerful enuf for a D70 user.. ;)

At last I got an SB-800 .

Thank you for all your comments.

Yes Dennis, I will not. Yesterday I tried it with my cam... Amazing results. I still haven't used many of its features ;) . Upzz for Nikon .

So far in my memory, this flash impressed me the most with its outstanding features and accuracy  . The only other flash that gets into my memory is the head and hammer Pentax AF400T loooong ago which I have working with my LX, no features but very versatile but again it may be just the body that is good.

I went down to AP yesterday to buy a new bag. And enquired about the SB-600. The guy looked at me, sorta frowned and said I should get the SB-800.. haha :) Well, my budget isn't that high right now. Still considering whether I should buy the SB-800, considering I still might want to get a tripod in the near future. Anyway, Are there any other speedlights that can work with the D70 other than the Sb-600 and SB-800?

If you meant i-TTL, no. Only SB-600 & SB-800 provides i-TTL. SB-80DX would work in manual and auto mode. That's it. No forms of TTL apart from i-TTL will work on the D70.

IMO ... shoot with what you can afford.
IF can't afford the iTTL .. buy one with manual control :)

Coz somewhile back I use my Fuji S602z with SB-50DX mounted on it.

No TTL , no manual control .. just fire fire fire til I got the result I like ..
but unfortunately ... I never got one :D

Then I mount my SB-26 .. and hey ... I love the result

Then I bought the D1H ... mount my SB-50DX in hope the D-TTL do magic for me.
Snap snap snap .. indoor .. done around 200 frames .. hmm dun really like what I see :D

N said to myself ... I should have bought Canon DSLR as their eTTL is marvelous

Then I mount my old SB-26 .. in hope this ol fella is not exhausted.
Well ... so far I prefer my SB-26 on A mode shots compared to my SB-50DX on D-TTL which supposed to do magic.

IMO .. Flash photography is not easy .... if it is easy ... my friend is not spending 3 months on a course of ligthing

After I bought the D70, initially was quite heart pain to part $600+ for SB800, I bought a secondhand SB28, this flash works well with D70 except that have to manually set the ISO, Apperture and zoom to match with camera setting. The result was good as long as you accordingly. The SB28 can go below F5.6, so even if you have F2.8 len, have to set to F5.6 in D70 when you want to use the flash.

I finally bought the SB800 from MS Color @ $620 net inclusive of GST, SB800 is designed to work with D70.

Guess like what I've read, most ppl decided to settle for SB-800 in the end. :)
