Sony RX100 Mark III

Started a little write up on the camera. Will add more thoughts as I go along.

One thing I do like is the new FN button quick menu. Layout is more direct and efficient.
I prefer the screen position on the MK2 when it's open though, the MK3 seems a little fragile, and i don't do selfies...ever.

Lightroom 5.5 update can handle the RAW files from MK3, and I seem to be able to get more latitude out of them slightly than MK2 which is a bonus.

Just bought the AG-R2 attachment grip (S$20) from the Sony Centre @ ned #03-21. It really does enhance of the grip of my RX100M3, especially when holding the cam vertically.

To me I also felt the same.. but no choice for such a spec that no other competitor is able to met yet.. so its definitely a good time for sony to uphold their price while they can. Well at least at this point of time..

Hmmm.... What spec are u referring to that competitors not able to meet? Canon G1X mk2 plus has bigger 1.5" sensor and 5x zoom lens with f2.0 to 3.9. For me, this is better than the rx100m3 specs which is only better in the aperture part but lose out in sensor size and reach.

P.S. I am not canon fanboy and I don't own any canon for past few years.

Mainly the sensor size loh.. at least for the time being. G1x mk2 is certainly a good pns with the biggest sensor but I would not compare the two under the same cat because of the hugh size and weight differences.. to me, the g1x just dont fit into the pocketable range.. not at least into my pocket.. I was once very fond of it and almost wanted to buy but realise that all my pants pocket just isnt big enough.. keke..

Ps- check out kai wong's video review on the g1x mk2 on how he attempt to pocket it and have a good laugh..

Which competitor has this size / weight / 1" or bigger sensor / built in EVF?

Considering the price of a camera and an external EVF(for other products) attached, i think the price for m3 is justifiable.

I was also shopping for a pocket size camera but cannot find a product that has this spec

I agree there is no other competitor able to match the items you listed. BUT for different users there are different priorities. For example, for me, (1) evf is non-issue - I just don't use it cos none of the current evfs (with the possible exception of Fuji's X-T1) are good enough and I don't like to hold my small mirrorless like a dslr (2) 1" sensor still too small for me - my minimum "acceptable" sensor size is m43 (3) size and weight is also not big issue for me cos I won't put my camera in my pocket anyway. If was serious about my pics, I would certainly not mind carrying a small bag to put my A6000/A7/RX1/EM5/EP5/XE2, etc into it. Not to mention, putting a $1000++ camera into my pocket which has my car keys and coins in it is not something I would subject said camera to. And even at the size of the RX100, putting it in my pants or shirt pocket is still not practical - maybe jacket pocket is ok but often do we wear jackets? And sometimes too small makes handling it slightly difficult too - my hands keep bumping into each other.

Anyway, all I was trying to put across was that there is no single "universal truth". The way bro jackwolf (no offence intended, just discussion) put across that "no other competitor can meet" sounded so absolute and final that it made me feel uneasy. As they say, "different strokes for different folks". For me, even if RX100m3 was $999 I also won't buy (refer to 3 reasons above). In fact I don't mind to admit that I did buy the G1Xm2 only to sell it after a couple of days because the AF was poor and I didn't like the dual control rings around the lens. Stupid me, I should have tested at canon centre first.

@bro jackwolf, yes of course the G1Xm2 is bigger size and heavier than RX100m3 - the sensor (and therefore lens) is significantly bigger (esecially since it has 5x zoom instead of 3x) so of course the body has to be bigger too - it's just physics. There will always be trade offs - you can't have everything. You can't get big sensor, long zoom, fast aperture, pocket size and affordable all at the same time. Usually you can only get 2 or maybe 3 out of the 5 ("affordable" being a subjective quantity).

Anyone knows where got good deals on Rx100 iii?

Decided on it after tested out the a6000 & rx100 at Sony nex. Since it is used as a backup to my a7, rx100 compactness with evf & flash all squeezed into one tiny body won me over though I must admit a6000 is overall better in IQ & fast AF.

I share the same sentiment. For me, the size/weight, built-in evf and a "big enough" sensor are the selling points, so yes, to me also there are no competitor that has these specs.

My main purpose of carrying a camera is take with me on holidays. I've totally given up lugging my dslr on holidays, even my Fuji X-100. My D90 is too bulky and heavy and the X100, while still pocketable, is not selfie-friendly. I tried using the Sony QX100, but the process of setting up the link with my iPhone is too cumbersome. Maybe works better with NFC-equipped phones. I find the IQ from the QX100 very acceptable for viewing the photos on my iPad. So I'm very happy that Sony released the RX100 m3. Although the price is a bit premium, it fits all my requirement, and looking around, can't find other cameras that fit the bill. Perhaps this will be the last camera that I'll buy, unless someone can make something even slimmer with same or better specs.

that's rubbish.

they don't just give ONE gift for everything. go and take a hard look at the brochure. some products have more than one free gift.

go and do your research before making sweeping statements like that.

went to check about the promo, they are currently only giving 01 x 16GB SD card, case was only with preorder! But if you walk around funan you would be able to find a good price

Glad you mentioned that there is no universal true.. you have your opinion and I have mine... I don't think my statement mean to be very absolute about comparing the spec of the sony with other compact, or maybe I should have mentioned that I am actually comparing it with smaller 'compact' size pns..

Anyway, lets move on..
