nice lens & pic. good point, based on the pictures and the feature packed on the NEX camera, it seems a winner. a little short on the AF lenses at the moment, even alpha mount cannot AF, thus kinda limits the users to try manual lenses. wonder how the hi res lcd fare in bright daylight for manual lenses?& no EVF to play with manual lens...hmmm :think:
going to be interesting to see what's next from oly, pana, samsung.

But at the launch, there's no mention of the lens roadmap, EVF, etc which one would expect at such events. So whether the NEX is viable as a system is still a big question mark.

I think the current line of Samsung mirrorless cameras are dead. Too big for a pnS replacement and too small to be a serious DSLR. Unless they re-invent themselves quickly, their target market will be taken over by Sony mostly and some Oly and pana for good measure.

Samsung are determined to overtake Sony (and Panasonic), at any cost, in all categories. I believe that they will continue and will pump out body after body in order to achieve their goal. While I don't care for their products, they have achieved quite a lot in a short time. You certainly don't see Pentax on those bodies at all.

Of course NEX spec should look better than GF1 and PEns. Sony has one year to improve and learn from the m4/3.

But honestly, due to the bigger sensor, the lens for Nex seems oversize for the little body of NEX. Anyway, it's a damn good camera.

yes, their product launches is very fast and brand image have rocketed to 'premium' status like sony in a short 4-5 yrs.

there seems determine to do the same, so decided to start their own mount & will learn the industry quickily....

so, we shall see how their plan goes...

I played with the NEX-5 at the PC Show over the weekend. I only spent about 5-7 minutes with it, as there was another guy who kept leaning on (yes, "on") my shoulder to see what I was doing. It got annoying after about 2 seconds. Here's my quick impression of the new camera:

There aren't a lot of buttons. I didn't like that, as most of the manual functions (i.e. PASM modes) required LOTS of button pushing (including switching between P, A, S and M). The assignment of functions to the buttons also isn't consistent, so between different screens, the same button can have different uses, and you do spend a lot of time trying to back-track. Maybe this gets better with time/usage. Controlling shutter speed and aperture in M mode was okay only... I still like having 2 wheels to control each separately on my E-P2. There's a lot of information shown on the LCD screen... TOO much. But I assume that you can customise how much is displayed.

As for the physical form-factor, I'm both impressed and unimpressed by certain design elements.
1) the body feels good, but the stock e-mount lenses feel like crap.
2) the accessory port on the top of the camera has a flimsy cover.
3) the on/off switch is old-school and takes up a lot of real-estate.
4) the flip screen has a very cool mechanism for flipping open/up/down, but I could see how this could accidentally snap off in the wrong direction
5) the kit zoom lens is too bulky and throws off the balance when in your hand
6) the scroll wheel feels really nice and has more friction and you won't accidentally overshoot your target in the menu - better than the E-P1/2 - similar in tactile feel to the GF-1

As noted in DP Review, Sony is targeting the PnS user looking to move up to the next level without getting a dSLR. Because the menu is so simplistic, I think that they've succeeded in that goal. But as a former dSLR user, I am frustrated by the functionality being hidden within layers of menus.

Tried the NEX at the PC Show too. What really turned me off was how the mode dial was handled. You have to press a button, go to mode dial select then rotate the overly sensitive (to me anyway) dial to select PASM. I found it tedious just to switch modes and just couldn't be bothered anymore.

I really feel that the m4/3 scenes are starting to get fired up because of Sony's entry (pardon me, haven't heard much of Samsung mirrorless cam).

I wonder which system would have the ultimate advantage in lens variety and flexibility.

Example: Oly could mount on 4/3(some) without losing their AF etc, Panny and Oly share m4/3 lenses generously, but whos there for Sony? Samsung?

Thats the most important thought i have in mind since Sony's NEX launch with such attractive prices and specs!

What do you mean by similar systems? The Sony and Samsung systems are similar to micro Four-Thirds.

If Oly and Panny really goes ahead with the "flood the market with lens plan", i would be daringly investing in the m4/3 system instead of hesitating to get extra lens besides the kit and some basic acces for now.

Also if Panny and Lecia would build more affordable m4/3 lens, that would really be the pull factor for the whole of the m4/3 market.

It's a shame that Samsung and Sony hate each other so much. They could have designed a system together and made it more likely to succeed. I saw yesterday that some Japanese company announced lens adapters for Sony's format but as far as I've seen, no one has made an announcement for Samsung.
