Sony LA-EA2

I am keen on LA-EA2 and 80-400mm. Guess I would have to go down to the store to try out and judge from there.
Unfortunately, hardly sony center carry this lens.

You mean the 70-400? Works well, focuses as fast as a A55.

If you want to molest a 70-400 to play play let me know.

Thats too general a statement !

Just as it is with an Alpha mount camera, different lense will have different AF speed, SSM lense are the fastest, followed by SAM lense and finally screw-driven legacy lense.

The LA-EA2 with my 70-300G is blazing fast, even the SAL 35f1.8 AF is faster than stock 5N with 18-55 kit lens.
In bright light, CDAF are as fast as if not faster than PDAF but in poor light, I'll go for a PDAF camera anytime !

I tried with SAL50F1.8, SAL2875F2.8 and SAL18250 with the EA2. Somehow I feel that the focusing is slower as compared to the kit lens or the SEL18200 leh... Have not tried SSM lens so far.

try various minolta and sony lenses
the venerable minolta 100mm f2 50mm f1.4 Rs, the sony sam 50mm f1.8 , 135 1.8 and 24mm 2
all are sharp and relatively fast for the non ssm lens, i dun think they af any slower than the a33 and 55.
the best thing is all the lens focusing is spot on and accurate. if there any real issue, the le-ea2 enable micro-adjustment for non e-mount lenses

normanho23 is rite, in term of focusing the e lenses is still better. i not surprise they are like the usm and swm of the canon and nikon swift n silent.
those from the minolta/sony user group who already accustomed to the screw drive mount of the minolta -sony lenses will find the speed still bearable.

From my experience, SAL50f1.8 slightly slower than SAL35f1.8, SAL2875f2.8 and SAL18250 are screw driven AF lense.
Had a challenge from a buddy with a GF3 on AF speed recently, it was a night street scene, and we stood about 2m apart facing each other, a third friend gave the "shoot" signal and my 5N+LA-EA2+SAL35f1.8 won 5 out of 7 times.

Simple rules as follows:
1) At the signal, bring camera up from hip, frame the other guy and shoot, swing to face the side when done.
2) Winner is the one who was photographed facing the side.
3) Out of focus picture is considered a "miss" and you lost.
4) Photograph which does not clearly shows the other person's face (ie: only his chest) also considered a "miss"

It would have been 7 out of 7 if I had the 70-300G but the focal length's too long and it not a comparable setup.
...come to think of it, we must have looked pretty queer doing that :bsmilie:

yes..i am really keen to try out LA-E2 + 70-400mm. Called a few Sony center, none of them has stock.
I am using nex5N. where can I moles them ?

It would lose 1/3 stop ? so at 400m, the max aperture is f8 ?

Aperture stays the same. Just that 1/3 stop less light hits the sensor, so it will usually either boost ISO or compensate with shutter speed.

I have the 70-400 at my house. If you're up north can molest. :P

How does it work ? So we can have f5.6, but with EV + 1/3.
That would require higher ISO to compensate. Am I right ?

Depends on your shooting mode - it will compensate based on the metering as normal. You don't need to dial in a +1/3 EV.

In other words, if you are out shooting and it gets a bit cloudy (reducing light), how will your camera normally compensate? Slower shutter speed? Higher ISO? Both? Makes more sense now? :)
