Sony DSC-RX100

you need the PlayMemories software to playback AVCHD files if you don't have the correct codecs available on your Mac.

oh damn thats right. didn't occur to me as it showed up with a VLC icon.

thanks for clearing that up! ok so it shouldnt be a problem - can grab the files manually, worst case

about playing back AVCHD files, will it play on VLC? ive yet to see a file that VLC doesnt play. lol.

and i actually just got my RX100 so time to start playing around with it. quite shocking that there's no full user manual in print, and they dont even include the advanced user guide in PDF on the site - i find the html version quite annoying to use. someone had converted the advanced manual from html to pdf, and i found it here so can transfer to mobile phone or ipad etc and read if u want.. i find that easier

i also notice then that the RX100 can record in ACVHD format and mp4...is there a major difference in quality? sorry if this is a stupid question, but since im asking about video here, i thought i'd ask this too :D thanks

Lightroom is able to read AVHCD file but you have to find the file in your SD Card, its a bit tricky because of the way Sony uses file folders. AVCHD format usesthe best video quality and resolution available in the camera. The MP4 is lower resolution (1440 vs 1920) and only max at 25/30fps instead of the 50/60fps in AVCHD

ah i see, cool. i'll give it a shot n see how it works out for me. not that i shoot video often anyway (hardly ever do) but i just wanted to be sure :D

and im not sure if this was posted already, but dpreview has released its full review on the RX100 - a pretty solid 78%

planning on getting my RX100 tmr. just a question about a line i saw on the online manual...need PlayMemories software to import the ACVHD files to a computer? bit concerned coz i have a macbook and this software isnt available for mac. i usually use lightroom to import all files from my sd card - i dont have much knowledge about video/video files, but sure ACVHD files are still video files and lightroom can import them to a location on my HDD?

Mac wont grab the ACVHD files automatically in things like Imovie...BUT....Final Cut Pro X will :D....I use FCPX for work and also have a copy on my mac at home...so any imports I do off GH2 or EP3, RX100 are all done via this program...with video I assume you will want to edit it, so why not invest in FCPX...priced at $299 it's very reasonable for what you're getting....just a suggestion.

I manually imported ACVHD files for years and then manually converted them and it was a pain in the a$$.
Also unless you are doing it right ...when converting to say .mov.mp4...you'll lose some of the quality noticeably....

Hope this helps

thanks for the suggestion :) but nah, i rarely shoot video and investing in that kinda software is just not for me.. i asked the question purely out of curiosity. cheers

I must be missing something very obvious here, but how do you adjust the shutter speed/aperture manually for videos?

I tried pressing the video button in M mode, but I couldn't use the control dial at the back to adjust either the shutter speed or aperture. I could only play with the exposure compensation and ISO (because I set the lens control ring to ISO adjustments).

I think you first have to turn the top dial to video mode and select the manual option from the PASM menu.

Thought I'll feedback on the smile shutter while video recording feature, something that's not tested in other reviews.

It works to a certain extent. There's no lag in the video absolutely, but the photos taken are sorely lacking in details for 17 megapixels. It might be useful for you (or rather, the camera making the decision) to take stills of people smiling while you're trying to video-record them getting into a group photo. You'll be able to get away with nice HD video, but you'll probably want to keep the stills on Facebook.

is there any other way to get AEL on the RX100, other than the center button? coz i like to use the flexible point AF area, and use the center button to move the AF point around...only problem here is that cant use AEL - same issue if u wanna use the tracking focus feature too...center button again

Can you customize the right and left navigation buttons? Like the NEX.

bingo! cant believe i missed that. haha. i usually "RTFM", but this time there's no FM! :P and i really find it hard to read a pdf the way i'd read a printed manual. oh well, thats wat i was looking for...thanks! probably gonna change the flash mode to AEL toggle...i rarely use flash...and i believe the Fn button can do flash mode

What do you expect from Ken Rockwell? Also, Sony never said it has a DSLR sensor - it has the same sized sensor as the Nikon V1, performs better than the Nikon V1 at high ISO, and KRW loved the V1.

Please lah, most people know that the only thing Ken Rockwell's opinions are good for is for laughs.

Yep.. KR is known in photography circles. He makes incredulous comments to get people to his site...

Recently use DMF on taking moon photos. Half way, the lens hangs! :o Restart still cannot and then, I took out battery, reinsert, ok liao. After which, no more problem, phew!

I think BBTM must hv zoomed to the max and then point the camera down or less than the minimum focusing distance and then the lens got confused. If that is the case, point to infinity n half press shutter n if it doesn't work still, point to infinity n shutdown. I do not own the RX100 but this has been my experience with compacts. Hope that helps.
