Sony Cybershot WX-1

I am using Sandisk UltraII MS Pro duo card. Faster than Sony Mark2

Any problems writing/reading or error messages when using it on WX1?

And how much and where did you buy?

last shot was too busy, too many leaves cluttering the scene. There's no main focus. Boats are too obscured by the leaves and one quarter of the picture is covered by dark leaves, which doesn't add anything to the image.

went to Parissilk today to get some stuff. At the same time, had a look at the Sony WX1. Guy beside me just bought a Canon S90. So I asked the sales guy what he thinks of these 2 cameras. He says comparing the WX1 to the S90, there's no fight, in terms of JPEG images in good light and manual controls. The image quality of the S90 beats the WX1 hands down. However, the WX1 has the nifty pano feature, which is very easy and useable and the low light capabilities are quite good.
So I guess there's pros and cons. I'm still inclined to the WX1 as I feel that JPEG quality can be enhanced in post processing via batch processing, whereas the pano feature requires much more effort to do a good stitch. What with the wide angle (24mm) and the pano feature, it's a very compelling travel camera which also has very strong low light capabilities.

I had a hands on with the S90. Seems lighter than I imagined. The fly wheel stories were true. It is a free rotating wheel. From a ergonomics standpoint, very bad design, it's so easy to just nudge it and have your settings go haywire. However, if you're the careful type, I guess it's ok. I didn't have a chance to take pics with the 2 cameras as the sales guy said that the batteries were not charged and they don't have charged batteries for testing. What an excuse. Anyway, will be interested in what bros here have to say about these 2 cameras.
Oh, the sales guy says that it's not that the Sony took bad pictures in good light, it is just that when compared to the Canon S90, it lost the fight.

No picture no talk lar... I would prefer to take a few shots and compare on my monitor and print out at the local printer to see the difference... in my opinion, Canon's colour still falls flat while the Sony is a lot more vivid, but the Sony's jpeg compression leaves much to be desired and so in terms of smoothness, the Canon edges out (which might be more important actually)...

I took some photo using twilight mode at night, the quality of the picture is good!
as for the s90 i try it out..i don't like the wheel thing...if you going to get a s90 i rather you get a lx3. but if you want something fun, small, easy to use, go for WX1

The one feature I really like about the WX1 is its ability to take pictures of fast moving subjects like children and pets... something even most DSLRs have problem doing well. Just set the camera to Anti Motion Blur and you can take a reasonably sharp photo of your fidgety kids or pets or people. Try this at your camera dealers or Sony showrooms... set to Anti Motion Blur mode, shake your camera and snap the exposure button at the same time and see what you can get. I have never come across any camera that could take a decent photo when treated this way... not even DSLRs can do this.

My WX1 is now set to this mode by default all the time.

Any reason why can't they incorporate the Anti-Motion Blur feature into the Handheld Twilight? It would be fantastic for taking pictures with kids running in the house at night.

anti motion blur is simply defaulting to a higher iso range which helps to speed up the shutter while handheld twilight is stacking few shots of varying exposures to lower the noise

Not true at all.... do you actually have a WX1 or TX1 in the first place?
Both the Anti Motion Blur and Handheld Twilight modes stack 6 shots to achieve their respective desired effects. The objectives of Anti Motion Blur is to freeze motion while that of Handheld Twilight is to let you take low light shots handheld with low noise.

If you use Anti Motion Blur in low light environment like twilight, it will set the ISO speed to quite high... up to ISO 3200 to freeze motion. But if you use Anti Motion Blur in sufficient light like in daylight to take photos of your kids or pets, say, it will use the lowest ISO necessary for the job which can be ISO 160 (lowest ISO for WX1).

You can also set the camera to Handheld Twilight mode in bright daylight if you insist on doing so. In this case, the camera will behave like it's in Anti Motion Blur mode except that the ISO will be higher than if you had selected Anti Motion Blur mode resulting in loss of details due to unnecessary noise reduction. No point in doing so if you are picky about image quality as far as I'm concerned.

You can use Anti Motion Blur indoors at night. It will however tend to send the ISO to 3200. What shutter speed it will set will depend on how dark the room is. If too dark, it might not be sufficient to freeze the motion of your kids even at an ISO of 3200.

Surprisingly though, pics at ISO 3200 is quite good if you don't print at A4 size. Much better than most P&S digicams. That's because of the use of frame stacking algorithm to reduce noise... a technique other P&S digicams do not have.

reading all the posts here, I'm so tempted to get this camera. How's the quality of pics in normal light ? so many reviews says that it's not good. If you guys say it's great, I'm getting it this weekend.

personally for the price, i would say just get it. pics are better than the F200 EXR. and its cheaper than the S90.

WX1 night shot is always more impressive than its day shot(day shot is ok,just not great), this is what I felt after using it for 2months.
this is really a cam to shot nice low-light scene. i've used it in a concert, the color turn out to be very nice when at wide shot. but if you tried to zoom, i'm sorry to say the autofocus will gone mad in such a messy lighting situation, is slow and not accurate. low light is always good with wide shot and zoom of not exceeding 3x.
