Sony Cybershot WX-1

Pass by HN at Novena yesterday, they are giving away either extra a 8gb or spare battery on top of the trade-in offer and the normal freebies. Pricing would be $499 after trade-in... Is this a good offer?

Happen to see the Casio exilim EX-H10... Specs seems very good with better zoom range and 24mm wide and long battery life... Now still debating to see which one to get...

Any comments?

Thanks.

I just brought the WX1 for a holiday. It's nice as a EDC. The decent iso capability, lowlight mode and panaromic feature is great fun. The metering is not reliable and is often wonky, colours are sometimes painful to look at. But it's a small camera after all. I left my m8 and DSLR at home and focused on having fun instead of lugging so much gear around.

Only one little thing that appears strange. Fill flash on a dark background appears to give the subject a cutout with shadow effect. Ruins it totally. Example below.

Even if you used other PNS, you'd either get a similar effect or have your subject underexposed. What kind of effect on your subject were you expecting with an integrated direct flash that is positioned so close to the lens?

There will be a 3D effect on the subject, but not a cut out effect. That is what I was expecting. There looks like there is shadow beyond the subject, not just darker fringes.

Full sized image available by clicking on it.

Use a flash diffuser.

I looked at the full size image. Its probably motion blur froze by the flash. I guess either the subject moved or the slight camera shake during the 1/30 exposure :D

I see what you mean, almost like the background is a backdrop in a studio and the subject is standing in front of a flat 2D wall with a very harsh shadow on the right sleeve of the boy... very interesting... motion blur? A bit hard to believe though... I though the effect might be due to the boosting of the shadows using the DRO technology that is found in the DSLRs...

Does the WX-1 has the same HDR function like in the A550, composed from a few shots?

It does and works very well too. It's called hand held twilight on the Sony.

Just got the WX1 from HN Novena... got $100 off for trade-in spoil camera, free extra battery, 8gb and 4gb Sony MS and other normal freebies like mini tripod and screen protector.... and add in extra 2yrs extended warranty too... Worth it buy.... $499 for camera and $52 for extra 2yrs warranty...

Anyway, those Sony display sets since 2-3weeks ago for demo purposes are goind at another 10% off exd this month.... think include their DSLRs...

Anway, just sharing info to all...

Cheers...

Was deciding between the Fuji F200EXR which I owned before, Panasonic LX-3 and the Canon S90. Did a hands on with the Canon S90. Was pretty impressed with the shots coming out from it but due to pricing, I felt the Sony WX-1 with the Sweeping Pano was gonna give me better value for money.

Sample shots (downsized) taken today after I walked out of the shop.

Nope it is not. I tried, it only reduces noise in high ISO by layering multiple shots. It does not enhance the dynamic range/HDR like the A550.

My apologies.

That's rather interesting...

Firstly, DRO & HDR seem to be found only on DSLRs... while the twilight layering technique is not found in DSLRs... both sets of features would be good in both DSLRs and digicams I thought... I won't mind twilight layering in my A900!!!

no problem.

this feature is really impressive. since it uses multiple shots (6 i think?) and in the EXIF info, it reads like ISO400, 1/30, f/2.4 when there's only very little light available for the shot. even on ISO3200 shots, the noise level is considerably low.

I've just bought the Sony WX-1 from Sony Centre retail outlet, price after trade in of my old digital camera price was $499, free 8GB MSPD and case.

ya the pano function is pretty cool! no longer need to spend long hours merging the photos! :D
a pity that the portrait mode pano has shorter angle than in landscape.

Love the sweep pano and anti-motion blur function. Don't think I have come across any camera that can still take a shot while it is being shaken vigorously. This would be a really great feature to have for shooting out of a moving vehicle like on a tour bus. ;)

A couple of pano of One Fullerton on New Year Eve.

I concur, the pano function on the WX-1 has opened new doors in the way we presents our photos without the need for more time on our computer to stitch the photos together.
