Its a nice lens.
Pancake design (the size of perhaps the EF 40/2.8), all metal construction.
The 'normal' of a format is often defined as the diagonal of the format measurement.
43mm is the diagonal of the 135 format, so it was designed as the 'true normal' on 135 format (at least that was the design consideration).

better not stereotype any lenses or brand(s)...else someone might throw their Zeiss lenses at me just to prove I'm wrong haha. I do love love love my Leica & Zeiss just to go on the record.
I found the 0.5m MFD of my FE55/1.8 to be great for me...took nearly 200 product photos over the past week and this lens have actually stayed on my camera most of the time
