Sony A55 .. Dpreview Gold award!!!!

Bear in mind that using the phase AF while in video mode requires lens to be wide open at full aperture only....

Hi, alama, plastic body though high tech. Specs is in between mid to high end cameras. Plastic body is
to avoid high cost, though the infrastructure maybe solid to avoid vibration. Gold, but no award point is given.
Nevertheless, I am inclined towards buying it when it is made available in Oct.

Got lah ! ...look at the right hand menu under 'Latest review' ...Sony SLT A55 got 75% :bsmilie:

But I'm surprised with DPreview's review of the latest Sony, (They must have noticed Sony's massive promos launching the Nex systems and the success) ...I guess they realised they're not gonna get a piece of the pie if they keep criticizing Sony's products.

Anyway I'll take all their reviews with a big pinch of salt, for example:

"The A55 suffers from the same problem as the company's NEX models in that considerable delays are introduced if you turn image review on (the usual state for most cameras). Turning image review on does add around a two second delay before the review image appears and there's no way of getting back to live view during that time. Oddly, though, it doesn't feel like such a big issue in this situation. Working through the EVF, DSLR users are unlikely to expect a review image to appear, so it doesn't feel as unusual to not have one."

Is it really a problem ? ...I bet 550d with 30 mins image review enabled would fare better ? ;) ...Boy ! it must be really difficult to disable the image review function of the A55.

Ahh, finally a pellicle mirror DSLR! Wonder why Canon never thought to revive this when they made the excellent EOS RT and the EOS 1RS. Maybe we'll see more similar tech cameras from other manufacturers as it seems a very simple solution to the video AF problem.
Note: I believe Canon's pellicle mirror cameras were not popular because some people thought that the mirror degraded IQ; but mainly cos the viewfinder was quite dark- now negated by the electronic VF! Good job Sony.

My hair stands when I was reading the review. dpreview singing praises of Sony? now that's is a first! Dpreview is so anti Sony that its unbelievable that this article is written by them lol.

And I got hit by the BBB virus :p

Not only the viewfinder gets darker due to light loss, but there will be less light hitting the sensor. Your F2.8 is not so 2.8 anymore... correct me if I'm wrong here.

Reading between the lines, I get the sense that it's like a small boy forced to sing a song otherwise he's not gonna get any candies !:sweatsm:

Cos they still have OVF, bigger in size, can have VG and uses a bigger battery....to satisfy those who potentially will slam a33/55 for their weaknesses....though A560/580 have only MF video.

But still, as I mentioned earlier, with SAM, the AF motor noise will be the issue, as some reviews mentioned, even with 70-200 ssm, the af is still noticeable, not as silent as NEX...

probably the next thing sony needs to address is to incorporate the af motor of nex lenses into a-mount lenses.

Off hand, I can only think of a few: ...for pp'e with big hands ? :bsmilie: ...longer battery life ? ...Dslr users who die, die must have OVF ? ...to confuse the competitors ? ...it's a Sony tradition ? ...:sweatsm:

Thanks for enlightening bros. I think your comments are very valid. :)

You are right. On my old RT it was equivalent to losing 1/3 of a f stop.

There will be people who complain these new camera don't look pro enough. :bsmilie:

Huh?? :dunno:

Huh?? :dunno:
Remember that 30% of the light is reflected off the pellicle mirror to the AF module. Only 70% will pass through the mirror and reach the sensor. This is the same problem that my EOS RT faces. 30% approx equal to one third stop loss in light reaching the sensor.

But modern sensors outperform the ISO limitations of the old film I used to put in my RT so this limitation is not as bad as before (I think).
