so much depth in this picture, fantastic
I just buy:
35mm Biogon F2; and
50mm C Sonnar F1.5
wah sek my first time buy brand new lens - the glass is so new, I put under the lightbulb also cannot see any dust lei
Ya both chrome. I like zeiss in chrome better.
Got easy way of testing my Sonnar is optimised for F1.5 or F2.8? Simply focusfire on one subject at each aperture and look see whether got sharp anot hah?
Anyone has experience with the Nikkor Sonnars? Dtoh and the other masters please chime in, cheers![]()
Bro, where have u been? I had both Nikkor 50 f1.4 and the Canon 50 f1.5. The Nikkor amazing for close-ups, especially as a portrait lens. However, stop down if you are shooting to infinity. It glows...
Decided to keep the Canon instead as I find it easier to control the glow.
mykelism, u are too kind with your words.. after reading yours and Zoomp's post, i surf a bit then i kinda realized nikkor 50 f1.4 is a sonnar, thanks i learnt something today! Kinda neglected this lens since, its been laying in the dry cabinet for a while now.. here's my takes at diff apertures, i havent tried shooting at f4 to f8 with this lens.

Thanks raytoei for starting this thread, this lens family is indeed worth discussing. Can someone elaborate what exactly is sonnar, OT, is canon 50mm f1.8 a sonnar? thanks a million, i am a caveman who is not surf savvy..
Bro, it was this lens that brought our friendship together.
Anyway, don't think the 50 f1.8 is a sonnar.
Here's s link to the sonnar lenses. Of course, the prices listed there are no longer relevant. Prices have gone up also thanks to people like Gommy, Hacker and Benny.

My comment on 50 Zeiss C Sonnar after shooting 1 roll today in chinatown.
. Its sharp compared to classic lenses. I was wrong to say it is soft. Its actually sharp. it does not have a glow like old sonnar, but it does have a certain 'creaminess' in the phasing of the bokeh that gives it the classic look.
. Focus ring very smooth and well positioned. Much easier to focus than 50 summilux ASPH (focusing tab on lux is abit too close to the mount). It focuses like my 50 lux pre-asph
. Very Compact size. Its abt size of Summicron. Much smaller than summiluxes.
. On film, i cannot see focus shift. Havent test on my M9 yet. I think digital is easier to see.
. The 'sonnar look' at F1.5 to me is evident only in portraits. I took pictures of gratings, engines, bicycles and rusted metal and i do not really feel the sonnar effect as much as a portrait. Sonnar effect on flesh tones seems to be more pronounced.
. F1.5 most classic look
. F2.8 nothing really special lei.
. F8 is super sharp waaaaah
This is definitely a keeper for me. Compared to 50 lux ASPH and 50 lux pre-asph this sonnar is alot cheaper and can stand its ground in quality. Suppot made in japan products today!
