Meven is right...the modern Zeiss C Sonnar ZM is very sharp even wide open...after careful study...I prefer the old LTM CZJ f1.5 Sonnar (or Russia & Japanese copies) ...Zunow f1.1 is very rare...in addition, the bokeh is more like the Canon 50 f0.95 "special effect" lens...Sonnar f1.5 bokeh is creamy with smoothing effect...modern Zeiss C Sonnar ZM are achromatic aberration corrected and therefore less glow...if you like soft grow on the focus subject...choose the old Sonnar LTM...:)

chose your sonnar poison...

in case you missed it, i refer you to the 2010 sonnar lense test by zoomp et al.

More poison coming to our shores at our friendly drug pusher aka chiif:)
I heard that he will be selling Zeiss ZM lenses very soon and 12 ZM Sonnars (6 chrome and 6 black) is in the first batch...better do your pre-order fast;)

He finally decided to do it? He changed his mind the last time round. I bought the lens since anyhow. :P

Zunow is very ex. Even if I can buy it (need to sell both my kidneys), I dun think I dare to bring it on walkabout.

Zeiss C Sonnar F1.5 is comparatively cheap and affordable. Its a very flexible lens. Wide open it is soft cha bor lens, but stopped down it becomes modern sharp. The reason I have not got it is because there are 2 versions due to focus shift optimisation: one optimised for 1.5 and one optimised for 2.8. The trouble is the version is not apparent from the box or the serial. The only way to find out the version is to actually test it, and not many sellers willing to bother. Even if they know about the 2 different versions, they rather pretend they don't. All this makes the buying experience rather like a shot in the dark.

Which version is better, is subject of much academic debate. You can google for sonnar focus shift and you will see the discussions. I figure it really depends on personal preference. Anyhow, on film I do not think the focus shift is very apparent. btw, few people mention it but the Sonnar focuses at 0.9m which is something u might wanna note.

Yes, I'm looking at adding the Zeiss ZM Sonnar 50 to my arsenal....

Can't remember which source it was I read from (rangefinder forums perhaps?), but it was mentioned that the Zeiss ZM Sonnar 50 lenses that are sold in shops are optimised to 2.8 by default, and have to be sent to Zeiss (free-of-charge) for optimisation to 1.5. Perhaps someone can confirm this?

How much would the zunow cost? Haha.

A rare black version M39 version went for auction in Westlicht camera auction 14 (Nov 2008) lot 411 with a hammer price of EUR 3120

Nice! We will have regular dosage of poison!

Nice! Can you post more showcasing the shallow depth-of-field of this lens? I'm torn between this and the Planar ZM f2 50mm. Which produces a better 3D separation?

one modern sonnar and another from decades past... i love them both!

Here are some bokeh shots with the Zeiss C Sonnar (all shot at f1.5 or f2.8. FYI, my lens is optimized for f2.8). Not the best shots but they show you the characteristics of this lens (IMO).

And a few more bokeh shots.

Thanks for the photos! Hmm..Now I'm quite tempted to get the Sonnar as well! I wonder if optimizing it to f1.5 will help deliver better results? Any thoughts?

No, it doesn't. My lens was originally optimized for f2.8, I then sent it to Japan for optimization to f1.5 but did not like the results so I sent it back again and had it re-optimized for f2.8. In my opinion, the C Sonnar produces the best overall results (bokeh, colour, sharpness) at f2.8. The colours and sharpness pop out at f2.8.

Did you have to pay a fee for the optimisations, Max?

No fees on both occasions. I only had to pay for shipping from Singapore to Japan, I did not even had to pay for shipping from Japan back to Singapore.
